honestly tired of trying to convince people that trump's immigration policy is not really about violent undocumented immigrants or even just undocumented immigrants, but immigrants in general and even non-white people more broadly.
cool, cool. so we are sort of like citizens, but not really?

Much as I DESPISED my short foray into LitCrit, it honed a few aspects of my writing I hadn't considered until then. The example I usually give is character voice diversity. So many writers just don't realize there are little things you can do to shape the way readers "hear" their characters.
Everything I've ever written helps me as a writer. The more types of writing one does, the more tools one is adding to one's toolbox, to be employed in different contexts. So, yes, writing criticism absolutely helped me write novels.
@scalzi.com Having read your film criticism from your blog and now this from another author I like very much, would you say the form itself helps you develop as a writer?

Look, I’m a giant, MASSIVE nerd who wants to live in Iain Banks’ Culture as much as the next post-scarcity guy, but our current fill in the blank machines bear about as much relationship to intelligence as a duck does to a stealth bomber.

All of this is so incredibly stupid.

Best friend of more than thirty years, godfather to my daughter, dude who's been my brother since the day we met keeps mentioning using Gemini for faux DnD sessions and outlining story ideas.
Can't get him to read the book I wrote based on an idea HE helped spark off two decades ago.
Fucking hurts.
One of the worst things about being the only artist in your family, is being the only one that hates Ai and knows how unethical and gross it is, and meanwhile the rest of your family keeps singing it’s “high praises”.

Right in front of you….☠️

always so funny to me when people are like “how am I supposed to explain Gay to my kids?” my kid asks me way harder shit all the time. “why did they build the road this way? why are some people bad?” I don’t know. please ask me about Gay

Here is a true thing and it has nothing to do with sales or marketing or my of that noise.

If your blood family sucks, come be with us. I get the privilege of inviting you to be an honorary X-Man and you get to ride in the Blackbird and steal Gambit’s beer and be part of a family that loves you.

I cannot be more serious about this people.

You need to find a better alternative, if they don't walk this back.

You do not – I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS FUCKING ENOUGH, DO NOT – want to give these people your identification.

When the dipshits named LLM's "AI" and then, in a panic, realized that they needed to rename actual AI into "AGI" that should've been it.

Everyone should've realized they were full of shit.

pick up a pencil and start drawing

so anyone who tells you that artists are privileged, or lazy, or not class conscious or whatever the fuck grift they're trying to sell you on remember:

there is no such thing as "talent" there's only huge, seemingly unending resources of stubbornness that drives every artist you know forward

Pick up the pencil.

Have the audacity to make “bad” art. Have the guts to suck at it. Have the spine to decide your art deserves to exist.

GenAI is for cowards.

Are you a fucking coward? Have you survived everything up until now only to cave here?

No?

Then pick up the fucking. pencil. //

I am certain that whenever someone posts about “gatekeeping art” or whatever, they’re talking about posting drawings online for clicks. They never mean arranging rocks in the back yard. They never mean whistling to yourself and finding a tune that makes you happy. They never mean napkin doodles.

Been in cleanup mode on my last project for so long. Now that it's done* and I've started blocking out the next one I'm realizing how excited I already am to have those days again where I can just open the tap and let the pages fill up.

“But we lost all those girls.”

I think about this a lot—but unsurprisingly, Seanan puts the perfect words around it.

::cries in comics… and games… and movies… and books… and apparently everywhere else, also::
"We would have lost so much if we'd driven him away" is the justification.

But we lost all those girls. We lost the women they would have become. We lost the work they would have done. Why was his future work so much more valuable than theirs?

Yup. This is also why I get annoyed when people start suggesting "golden age" science fiction titles to people who are new the genre and are asking for suggestions. You want to turn a modern 15-year-old off science fiction forever, recommend stories that were old when her grandparents were her age.
When people ask how to get into GA SF I always say that the right way is via some of those fat "Best Of" short fiction collections

Generally the voice/tone comes first. That rides around on a mannequin for a bit, and as I watch them move through their world the details gradually reveal themselves. I tend to be pretty vague with most character descriptions, but even the version in my head takes a while to resolve itself.
This is specifically for the creator of original characters.

When it comes to making your original characters, what do you do in order to design them?

Do you make a mood board? Maybe get inspired by music for ideas?

How do you go about making your original characters?
