"Do we want to lose the country over defending trans people," is a deeply unserious question with only one right answer:

We either stand together and build a country worth defending... or we, deservedly, fall.

As an offshoot of this thread, let’s talk about what happens if federal, state, or local officials text, email, call, or show up at your door wanting to talk to you about what you said about the President.

I have a theme, a thesis, a throughline, a leitmotif, which is SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH.

This is a First Amendment question combined with a practical question. The answer is as follows.

First, the First Amendment protects advocating the moral and practical necessity of breaking the law in the abstract.

Being a lawyer and all, do you know what the tipping point is for it to become acceptable to openly advocate for political assassinations? Just a little curious, is all.

This from Jill Filipovic sums it up for me:

"In the coming days there's gonna be a lot of opining about what the Harris campaign did wrong, but this election was not an indictment of Kamala Harris. It was an indictment of America."

“U.S. Archivist Colleen Shogan ordered removal of prominent references to the displacement of indigenous tribes and incarceration of Japanese-Americans…Visitors shouldn’t feel confronted, a senior official told employees, they should feel welcomed.”

The reckoning really was just that one summer.

I really do not feel I was adequately prepared for how much Nazis would play a part in my adult life. Hearing about Nazis, reading about Nazis, seeing pictures of Nazis, here a Nazi, there a Nazi, everywhere a fucking Nazi.

I am extremely tired of having to think about Nazis.

Can I just-

It is absolutely poisonous that the right wing continues to make faithfully doing your job a risk to your life. I felt it as a library worker, every teacher I know feels it, doctors, journalists, now the damn weather reporters who are mostly known for keeping people safe and dad jokes.
“Ignorance is becoming socially acceptable.”

Meteorologists talk of death threats from the army of crazed conspiracy theorists who believe the government can control the weather.

There are a lot of reasons I’m glad I was a teen when I was (the 90s) instead of now, but the one I feel most deeply is the entire concept of homecoming and prom proposals. I cringe every time I think about it.

(Look, nobody was asking me to Homecoming or Prom but even the possibility!! My God.)

This has been one of our most effective tactics to counter anti-trans rhetoric at our school board meetings. Saying, "Adults who concern themselves with policing the private parts of other people's children are not normal & we shouldn't listen to them" is succinct & easily understandable.
Finally. Here’s the thing about social norms. They can only be destroyed if the people who violate them get away with it. There is a place in every society for social punishment. “You are weird and creepy” is an effective message for people who are harming and controlling others.
"the instinct that Democrats have too often is that if we just reason with the other side, and if we just talk about our policies and we explain why we're right and they're wrong, that quote-unquote 'logic' will win out -- but that's not how the world works anymore"

Psst:

Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders.

Pass it on.

The woman working traffic at Dulles right now is descending on people like an avenging angel and it is a marvel to behold. I’m not sure where in the world you can just sit in the pickup line at an airport to wait for someone to come out, but you certainly can’t do it here, not while she’s on duty.

Well, my CVS is now locking up refrigerated drinks. How long till we just have to order from an iPad at the front? (Which would be preferable to this, tbh) BTW, two of the glass doors are shattered so apparently someone didn’t care for it.
