I helped legalize cannabis in Canada and won some precedent setting medical cannabis cases. Now I practice law in British Columbia and run a cannabis company called Great Gardener Farms. Dad and husband. Deadhead. Lions fan. He/him.
Dems take note. The only people that want you to run a “centrist” or “moderate” in 2028 are republicans, mainstream political pundits and those candidates that fit that description.
And this was interestingly unanimous— and not being that well reflected yet in the offerings from actual Dem politicians. Word to the wise

All I see on my Twitter timeline are reporters parsing every quote from AOC in Germany, trying to mock them for incoherence or inaccuracy, while a demented old man who can’t string sentences together or stay awake sits in the Oval, while the legacy media happily sanewashes his quotes.

I feel like this is pretty key. Newsom is signaling that he wants to throw trans people under every available bus. that is a reason to denounce him, not to preemptively demand that trans people endorse him. 1
it's one thing to say with regards to a general election "vote blue no matter who"

but it's a completely different thing to insist (as *lots* of Dem accounts I've personally seen are saying) that trans ppl *must* vote for Newsom when we're still several years away from presidential primaries!

I mean yes. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

But also fight like hell for as perfect as you can get and it’s ok to be pissed off at most of the current crop of feckless weak-ass Dems and spend the next couple years trying to get a good candidate.

But yes on voting day it’s binary.
That’s right. That’s correct. Because I have an above-room-temperature IQ and understand that when forced to choose between MAGA and ANYONE ELSE, I should vote for the second option no matter how much I personally detest them.

If I were a Democrat concerned about winning elections and was hearing that a significant number of voters wouldn’t support Gavin Newsom in 2028, I would simply stop pushing Gavin Newsom in 2026.
look if you want to freak out about people not voting newsom if he's the nominee a week before the 2028 general election, I kinda get it (but don't say you weren't warned). doing it now though is just a weird attempt to strong arm people into supporting him in the primary.
I think most (not all) of the "I will never vote for Gavin Newsom" people are communists who are mad that Americans don't like communism and want to destroy the Democratic party out of revenge. They don't care how many elections Republicans win or how many trans people die as long as the Dems fall.

The way for Dems to win back the working class is (a) to stand proudly for policies that benefit the working class and (b) to aggressively attack and oppose policies that harm the working class. They do both of these things badly right now (with some obvious individual exceptions).
Remarkable: Majority of working class voters oppose deportations of undocumented immigrants with jobs/no criminal records, per new Marquette data.

Remember how pundits said 2024 meant Dems must become restrictionist to win back working class? I challenge that here:

As I’ve said before they are not hiding their plans to get rid of democracy. Take it seriously.

this is such a deeply perverted sickness of the soul
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

One of the very few Dems that actually inspires me and give me hope - albeit faint - that American can drag itself away from outright fascism and corporatism. I hope she’s testing the waters for a run in 2028 and if she does, we should all hope she wins.
AOC: "Extreme level of wealth inequality leads to social instability and drives authoritarianism, right-wing populism, and really dangerous domestic internal politics. That is a direct outcome of the failure of democracies over decades to deliver."

They are absolutely going to use ICE to intimidate voters in democratic leaning areas and suppress voting. They’ll make stuff up about non-citizens voting to cover it. Take it seriously.
The President and his cabinet have suggested having masked ICE agents encircling polling places. It's not fantasy, and it's not made up. And we need to be clear-eyed about that.
Does ICE have the authority to be deployed polling places?

The NFL killed Kap’s career because he opposed racism and the murder of civilians by police.
The NFL doesn't seem to be inclined to investigate or discipline Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, based on his emails with Jeffrey Epstein. The language of the Personal Conduct Policy would seem to justify it, if the league truly wanted to do it.
Will the NFL take action against Steve Tisch?
Nowadays, many approach a particularly troubling P.R. predicament by waiting.

Dangerous, fact-free and hateful. Please Canada let's stand together against the politicization of tragedy into a crusade against marginalized people.
NEW from me today:

Tumbler Ridge is mourning a horrific loss. But how the shooter's identity is being talked about online, and the dangerous links being made to trans people at large, will have resounding and dangerous impacts in the months and weeks to come.

Gross fact-free hate that has absolutely no place in our politics or our country.

This discussion is a fierce analysis of the present moment: the historical context of right now and the possible futures we’re fighting — and fighting for

I especially urge drug policy advocates to read this. When governments make harmful policy, don’t just say ‘politics’

its fascist politics
Fascism doesn’t rise by accident: it’s organised through capitalism, fear, and targeted wars on migrants, drugs, and people in poverty.
