I watched the switch happen in real time. Even though I was never exactly an athletic kid (band kid over here), I participated in softball and soccer without high cost or high pressure. By the time my baby sister (9 years younger than me) got into sports, the expensive travel teams had taken over.
One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kids’ résumés

Hot take: The doctor shouldn't be the one asking if it's ok if she uses AI to take patient notes. The power differential + patient anxiety + short appointment times means the patient feels pressure to say yes. It should be a question asked during check-in. (I wish it wasn't used at all, but...)

AI use necessarily reduces accuracy, transparency and authenticity.
But sci comm *needs* to be accurate, transparent, and authentic. Otherwise you’re just goofing around, which will destroy your audience‘s trust in you and in other sci comm.
