The demonization of Somalis is no different than the demonization of Haitians before the election. It's a political attack and has to be actively fought—not through half-measures or expressions of tepid concern but by demanding decency from society and respect for all of humanity.

My godmother died this morning after a long, long illness.

The last conversation I had with her (this week) included her telling me "we don't do that" about anti-Mexican bigotry in her clearest middle school teacher manner.

@kenwhite.bsky.social do you generally recommend clients run a website completely awash in user-generated revenge porn, including of minors? And, of course, they provide an extremely badly safeguarded AI that is easily prompted to provide that material.

Asking for Grok's owner and/or nemesis.
so x dot com’s ai generated CSAM and they admitted it may violate US law and … i haven’t seen in anyone in power say much at all or call to stop using the platform

While home, went to visit childhood teacher and friend who is in the hospital dying. She had a Lady of Guadalupe fleece blanket on her bed and my mom asked her where she got that. She said she heard some group was selling raffle tickets for them as a fundraiser and were having a hard time +

I'm back at my childhood home, deep in the rural part of a ruby red state. I'm listening to my dad, an old farmer, and my BIL, a retired auto sector exec, talking about how it is an embarrassment that we don't have universal healthcare.

Genuinely appalling that Princeton would publish this, much less that they're still promoting it. On the face of it this would seem to be at least plausibly defamatory.
A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

Far too many fundamentally misunderstand what voting is. It's not a form of personal moral expression; it's a large scale harm v benefit equation, & that takes certain sympathetic & critical thinking skills, of which there's a woeful dearth in this country.

Dumb & mean. That's what we are, mostly.

I just don’t think this is going away

people are going to play amateur sleuth with the redactions, people are going to invent brand new conspiracy theories, people are going to rightfully complain that they aren’t releasing everything

there’s no out here
Garcia: In our initial estimation—It could be that we're only getting about 10% of what the DOJ has. And of that 10%, 5% of that has already been released. And the other 5% is highly redacted. So we're getting very little so far

“Any DOJ official who does not comply with this law will be subject to prosecution for obstruction of justice,” Ro Khanna said in a House speech this week. “If Pam Bondi does not comply with the law, she will be held either in inherent contempt of Congress or subject to impeachment.”

Let’s go.

The entire american "free speech" panic was about elites being criticized, which is why anyone who ever took it seriously should be ignored forever
Freedom of speech, in the liberal ideal, was about limiting the power of the elites.

Now, in this twisted form, it is about forcing us to listen to elites and silencing the masses.
Total gaslighting. Anti-trans activist; chooses to speak in person, provoking students who want to protect trans rights; they exercise their freedom of speech to tell her she isn't wanted; she gets to speak anyway; the BBC dutifully platforms her again; and now she threatens to sue everyone.

“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

The problem is *never* not having any ideas. It always figuring out what ideas are minimally feasible, what you can get buy-in to, and will actually accomplish what you want.

"That's a great great idea but it'll never work."
I just saw someone yell “they’re just using it to generate ideas!”

And

I hate to say it

But if you work in the ART DEPARTMENT and you need a death machine stuffed with your colleagues’ work to give you ideas

Quit.

Proposal: any time someone wants to get an MBA, they have to go to therapy 1st.

If the therapist signs off, okay.

But not till then.

Trump’s Chief of Staff says Trump & Jeffrey Epstein were “young, single playboys together.”

Epstein wasn’t a “playboy.” He was a convicted sexual predator.

That language shows the moral rot in the White House surrounding the Epstein investigation.
