More sad news out of Florida: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission today voted to approve annual Florida black bear hunting seasons set to begin this December.

Hunting could do real damage to Florida’s recovering population of black bears.

I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.

The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.

Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

For the next four weeks, we are lifting the 9.30am rule on older and disabled people’s bus passes.

We hope it will help people over the summer as well as provide valuable data on whether we have the capacity and finances to make it permanent.

Please help spread the word! 🙏🏻

“The Lancet paper found that spending by USAID from 2001 to 2021 had saved roughly 92mn lives, 30mn of them children. It predicted that, unless the abrupt funding cuts were reversed, roughly 14mn additional people would die in the five years to 2030.”

The abrupt withdrawal of American funding has stranded millions of patients and will be felt by countries for years to come

Wondery fired 110 producers today. The latest in a bunch of cuts that have decimated long form narrative podcasting. I have noodled for years now on the way forward and I really see independent shows as the only way. Some of my producers lost side gigs from this. It’s really hard out here!

The headline here should say:

"Number of private schools increases by 35 - showing fears of an exodus to be unfounded".

(The increase is mentioned way down the article.)

A credible Times report in 2025 would say "private schools carry on .... fears unfounded so far ... number of schools up ... pupil numbers down marginally, as predicted by IFS, but not matching fears of sector + media" and then discuss the reasons the sector could swallow a marginal change

What have we become? Where is compassion? These bigots do not represent the majority of UK people....but how do we counter their hateful attitudes?
"Some of the younger children... were not as afraid. But the tearful, frightened eyes of a ten-year-old girl clinging to her father’s chest told a different story.

The terrifying chants of young men echoing through the hotel – “Send them out!” – filled the air like an ominous drumbeat."

Important (if depressing) to remember that the kind of authoritarian race-baiting expressed by Jenrick on Today (eg presenting all refugees as sexual predators and promising to deport all of them) was taboo in British politics for decades. Yet I doubt any Tory will publicly criticise him

As trad publishing becomes increasingly unsatisfactory for many, with advances plummeting and authors being asked to do more and more of what was once the publisher's job, more and more people are looking at self-publishing.

Always good to start the week with à song. May his memory be a blessing.
Farewell Tom Lehrer and thank you: I’ve listened to and laughed with you all my life. And five years ago he made all his songs (including dozens that he never recorded) public domain because he thought he’d made enough money from them. Here’s a perfect, bitingly brutal song. youtu.be/zCluI87gQ3I?...

Which will mean, after tax, once I've paid for her to be in nursery I will take home around £25.

And we wonder why young people aren't having children and struggling to get on the property ladder 🪜

Really unpleasant piece in yesterday's Times railing about older women "showing flesh" in summertime: written by an older woman, enthusiastically boosted by more older women, sickened by the sight of bare arms in the elderly.
Huh. The tank top it is, then.

Generally, the Guardian's been a good resource, but their actions re: the Observer were trash. Reposting this to celebrate independent media and reporting rising from the ashes of those actions.
Earlier this year, I lost my beloved job at my beloved Observer when the Guardian, in its great wisdom, gave the newspaper away to a podcast company...who promptly sacked me.

So, forgive my delight today, in being nominated for FIVE awards in the British Podcast Awards!!
