huh, strange they were never a target of DOGE after massively wasting taxpayer money
The Pentagon has failed its 8th straight audit, yet Congress just handed it a record $1 trillion budget that will pour billions into contractors tied to billionaires like Elon Musk and Alex Karp while ordinary Americans struggle to cover basic needs.

This means the VA won't cover abortions EVEN in the case of rape, incest, or serious threat to the health of the patient.

The DOJ memo was authored by Josh Craddock, one of the chief legal advocates for fetal personhood, i.e. imposing a nationwide abortion ban through the courts.
🚨🚨 SCOOP @ms.now : The Department of Veteran Affairs has quietly implemented its abortion ban following a DOJ memo issued last week.

This will affect 9 million veterans and their dependents, and has been a long time coming: It was outlined in Project 2025.

How I see people use LMMs for statistical analysis.
1. Query the LMM agent for code.
2. Try code.
3. Refine query if code fails.
4. If code works, proceed with results.
Never verify reliability of results, no time for that nonsense and statistics is just black magic anyways.

On DOGE’s watch, federal spending did not go down at all. It went up. But is still led to cuts that closed offices, canceled programs and deprived people of food, medicine and other aid.

Okay, this story of a real paper that become a (cited!) AI paper is *wild*
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

A very striking chart from an excellent new paper by @mclem.org.

Ageing high-income countries have a choice: accept that GDP growth is contingent on migration, or pin their futures on fantastical hopes of huge productivity growth.

Students often assume that models create insight.
I remind them: models compress what you already understand. If you don’t understand the domain, the model won’t rescue you. Assumptions come first.

Ironically, this does build a "deep state" -- where program managers, not scientists, make funding decisions.
🧵 NSF is reducing external review requirements and eliminating routine expert panels, citing staff shortages that this administration implemented. This change expands program officer authority. But the solution to flawed accountability isn't less public accountability.
