was good to see the pm bother to do his job for the first time and in doing so manage to not look like a pathetic loser wholly at the mercy of events for a fleeting moment

A typical one-hande...sorry, I mean one-sided response from Honorary President of Students4Reform and former Professor Matthew Goodwin, who left his role by his own accord.

Matt Goodwin pulled out of yesterday's hustings in Gorton because the group who organised it weren't impartial enough for him. I thought he'd debate anyone, anytime, any place. Not very marketplace of ideas of you, Matt.

In conclusion, AI is a land of contrasts and will be the next Labour leader.

Still all in on this TBH.

I am not an ostrich. AI obviously is having a material impact on a few sectors of the economy, but it's going to take more than a breathless blog post by someone who WORKS FOR AN AI START-UP to make me go full Butlerian Jihad.

What I continue to find maddening about these pieces is, look, if your new technological innovation does not create new jobs and just destroys old ones...you don't actually *have* to keep doing it!
This post argues AI is having a moment similar to when you heard about some illness in China back in February 2020.

Tech workers just watched AI go from “helpful tool” to “does my job better than I do.” Everyone else is next. Get your financial house in order and lean into what’s hardest to replace
Something Big Is Happening
A personal note for non-tech friends and family on what AI is starting to change.

Am obviously hating the way Radio Four, rather than binning vox pops on this and other issues, now just uses a few comments from Radio Five Live's morning phone-in. Cheaper, and saves a reporter having to stand in the cold recruiting jobless and retired passers-by. But it's still rubbish journalism.

New poll: In 2024, low-engagement voters went for Trump over Harris by 11 percentage points. But now they disapprove of the way he's handling the presidency by 13. They have moved 25 points against Trump — 2x as large as the shift for high-knowledge voters www.gelliottmorris.com/p/trump-lost...

Notable how little UK Govt, and specifically the health secretary, have to say about this. No sense that they can shape public behaviour. Very passive.
UK has lost its official status as a country that has achieved elimination of measles, as vaccination rates have fallen below the 95% required to achieve herd immunity. So sad, and likely due vaccine misinformation. If you haven't already, get your kids vaccinated ASAP. www.bbc.com/news/article...

But enough about the Prime Minister
A fascinating politician. Does not do the job, visibly and audibly not interested in the brief…bizarrely aggro about people pointing it out.

A genuinely perfect distillation of how unserious the current debate around Labour's apparent left wingedness is. The Callaghan government was also not economically left wing...
Looser fiscal policy; more regulation; employee rights; higher taxes on wealthy; rail renationalisation; higher minimum wage; 2 child limit..

Quite a list. I'd argue it's the most instinctively economically left wing govt since 1979.
