I had a terrific conversation with Khun Pitchaya Sudbanthad at #swf. Thanks Melissa de Silva for your warm & thoughtful moderation. It was good to have such an engaged & passionate audience too. Dark times but hope in down to earth community & connection.

Carole Cadwalladr on how the Guardian gave away the Observer (its Sunday paper) to the corporate world. Independent journalism, women editors, good reporters and readers, all sacrificed.

RIP, the Guardian-Observer 1993-2025. It was not a natural death.

The Trump admin is demanding universities institute anti-mask laws for student protesters, holding the schools’ funding as a ransom, while sending secret police in balaclavas to disappear immigrants
Men in plainclothes, one in a balaclava, raided the Charlottesville courthouse today. They abducted a local painter whose case (allegedly fighting with his roommate) was being dismissed, and another who was there paying fines. They took them away in unmarked vans.

UPDATE: ICE is wildly unconcerned about where this man is and no one will tell me, his registered attorney. The universal answer so far is "let's wait and see where he ends up." This is deeply off.

We would have more rights at this point if UPS had lost a pair of shoes I'd just bought from Zappos
My detained client was scheduled for a bond hearing this AM in a MA immigration court. He wasn't brought in, and he and his case have disappeared.

I then received this notice of activity on a nonexistent docket in which his name was changed to "N/A"

It's all happening a lot faster than I expected

Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires.

As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry.

The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.

Janisse Quiñones, CEO of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, said the fight to contain the flames has put immense strain on the system.

The insanity of being a fire ecologist in the epicenter of a major fire event, bags packed and ready to evacuate, watching active fire from my window, while taking media requests and explaining to the public, for the 100,000th time how climate change is largely responsible for this

Nature will have its way with us whether we believe in the climate crisis or not
"the devastation on its way is unimaginable"---tell this to the podcasters who'd helped elect the anti-science US president & to the "youth vote" that failed to care enough to vote.
The devastation on its way is unimaginable - like nothing humanity has ever witnessed before - and everyone will wish they had been climate activists and ‘hysterics’ when they had the chance. We are in a moment of unprecedented stupidity

Anti science propaganda is important to the fossil fuel industry, science denial is essential to climate change denial. Right-wing politicians and media are all in the pocket of global corporate interests. Trump's Republicans are gonna "drill baby drill"😥

Hats off to courageous people around the world who stand up for democracy and human rights at moments of crisis.
News anchor-turned politician Ms. Ahn Gwi-ryeong showed exceptional bravery during the South Korea martial law crisis, she confronted a soldier head on, grabbed his rifle, shamed him for usurping democracy and for confronting protestors while armed.

So it turns out they spent £715 million on sending a grand total of FOUR volunteers to Rwanda.

For comparison, this is more than you could expect to spend on building an entire brand new hospital in the UK
In July, I FOI'd the Home Office for the full breakdown of spending on the Rwanda scheme

I was refused because the government planned to publish the data in future, and today is the day. These numbers are in millions

Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”
