Casting Timothy Olyphant as Space Raylen was perfect for this.
ironically what makes star wars stuff best is when it is 'something else, but also star wars'
e.g. Andor, a British political thriller but also Star Wars
the Mandalorian, an episode-of-the-week Western but also Star Wars (when it was good)

Checking your ballot on the King County Elections site and making sure it wasn't rejected for a bad signature or other issue is important!
That said, there were more ballots in this drop -- 57,000 -- than initially forecast and therefore fewer on Monday -- 45,000. I genuinely think this could be decided by a hundred votes.

Understanding Seattle politics is making sense of Alexis Mercedes Rinck winning 80% of the vote and Bruce Harrell getting reelected.
I'm not shocked by this.
(Although Wilson is still within the margin for catching him as ballots shift left)

One year ago this morning I bought a Harris-Walz t-shirt in a naive moment of optimism. So basically this last year has been my fault.
Anyway, today we begin anew again to make our country the best, most hopeful version of itself. Go vote.

Got my first tattoo today. Was a super great experience and I'm looking forward to building on it with more, meaningful images from my life.

timers are also super effective, for me. post election I went from doom scrolling to budgeting 20 minutes per day on Bluesky. I've upped that to 45 minutes because of sports, but I rarely hit that anymore. If I do reach the limit, Android turns off the app for the rest of the day.
Random recommendation: I'm working on spending less time on my phone and setting it to grayscale has proven remarkably effective.

Our Helpline already sees nearly 100% of our clients take some kind of food or calorie assistance, and we're not even a food bank. We're expecting a very rough fall as food assistance programs increasingly tighten or fail, and people have to look further and further to meet basic needs.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Saturday that food benefits under one of the country's biggest social assistance programs will not be issued next month amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that to achieve left goals, we need broad coalitions. Part of making broad coalitions is believing that no one politician is actually that important--specifically in the sense that we don't need to protect people from the consequences of their actions.
Putting a Democrat with a Nazi tattoo in the Senate normalizes Naziism in our federal politics for a long ass time.
All these recent stories about secret Nazi group chats? Anytime that happens going forward will be met with "But Platner."
It's not a purity test. Think through the consequences.

Over the course of the season, it's plausible that Dan Wilson cost the Mariners enough wins that they lost home field advantage in this series. He very certainly cost them runs/games in the post season.
This was mainly in response to some people talking about "how can you criticize Dan Wilson he led the Mariners to their best ever season" and gosh damn it no, and gosh damn it that's not an excuse for his decision-making.

In the old copy of NCAA Football for Xbox 360 I have, Lee Corso makes a joke about how if DB's could catch they'd be wide receivers and I think about that every time a DB drops an interception.

@marcwbaseball.bsky.social we're reminiscing on the discord, so I thought I would--at the end of another season--thank you for your contributions to the USSM/LL blogosphere that created a community for so many of us to pour our feelings into on a night like this. Feels good not being alone.

Mariners baseball isn't something to enjoy, it's really more something you endure in order to make great art.

ok, do it again Tuesday.
I think about this Martha Graham line a lot, and though she's speaking about art, it's also about being a Mariner fan, and maybe the best advice I could give to anyone who joined the bandwagon this year about why I still follow this team every day of my life.

I was going to try to come up with a theological version of this post but couldn't get past the realization that Paul would have *LOVED* being a sports radio host.
Kant is a DRC+ guy, but wishes everyone would sacrifice bunt; Hume and Adam Smith prefer OPS; Jeremy Bentham is really into WPA; Aristotle loves RBIs and pitcher wins; Plato didn't care what your stats were as long as you hustled and listened to your manager
Is there an “old school” vs “analytics” battle of scoring philosophy, and is “it bounced” the dividing line?

Some fun personal news on what has been a mostly good Friday: I start a new job on Monday with a community helpline organization. I'll be back doing comms and fundraising.
I'm looking forward to getting into direct support and building strong communities. Everyone deserves a chance to flourish.

this, but not a joke, is a huge part of my theology. the busy work is tending to the people. baking a casserole, taking out the trash, picking up the communion cups after the service... these are all the 'busy work' of God, and doing them--without protest, without fanfare--is beautiful.
