Robert Selden Duvall.

"I've always remembered something Sanford Meisner, my acting teacher, told us. When you create a character, it's like making a chair, except instead of making something out of wood, you make it out of yourself. That's the actor's craft — using yourself to create a character."

I truly believe that this Bluesky platform could really take off as long as we stop calling posts "skeets" and instead refer to them as "skytes."

We're enjoying this All-Star game format, with the 3 teams playing round-robin style, and how competitive these short games are. It's lots of fun.

American culture of the 1840’s would have been *very fucking surprised* to see the Irish considered as co-founders.

Elon’s an ahistorical dipshit, but its always worth saying some stuff out loud: if you‘re a fellow Irish-American and you aren’t 100% pro-immigrant, you’re a fucking embarassment.
1/3 What Musk is really referring to here is, of course “race” - that construct that served to define the hierarchies of wealth & power structured by modern colonialism. Like other far right racists though, he uses the word “culture” as a seemingly less pernicious synonym.

Happy birthday to one of the greatest, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, he didn't know his actual birthday, but chose to celebrate it on this day.

Please read his books and essays; please teach your children his story when they are old enough to understand.

David Roberts really hit the nail perfectly on the head here in this thread about the authoritarian personality.
One more quick thread, and then I'm getting out of here to walk my dog in the sun.

I think a lot about the authoritarian personality. I won't start going on about that because this thread would last forever, but I just want to say one thing about it.

Though they have very different schticks, very different personal dispositions, I do think Trump and Carlson have something deeply in common: there is a gaping hole inside that they need to fill with public attention and approbation. They seek it like a divining rod to water.

This is a wonderful piece of writing, as are cities like San Francisco, or my home of Boston.
It's true! Right-wingers really do start to believe their own bullshit about big cities.

I remember when my parents first visited me in NYC. They were legit terrified of the subway.

When they got on and saw how normal it was, they were genuinely shocked.
