The Syrian Arabic word for a hamster is أبو جراب (abu jrab), where jrab refers to a pouch/saddlebag/tote. And abu often means “father of,” but can also function as a general honorific (like “mister”). So it’s not too big a stretch to say the Syrian Arabic word for a hamster means “Mister Saddlebags”

Prohibition started in Colorado in 1916. The Coors family pivoted to ceramics, using the rich clay deposits around Golden. That kept the family business afloat until the end of Prohibition in 1933. Coors Porcelain Company became CoorsTEK, which is still in Golden today.

Anyone know about the Minnesota's new price caps on life saving medications? Trying to fill an EpiPen Rx and it STILL costs $$$ even with a coupon.

I suspect the cap applies only to generics. Seeking confirmation from someone in the know!

Would be a real shame if people flooded this email with nonsensical stuff.

Yup!
Mountain West leftists (and liberals) know exactly what they’re doing. They’re diamonds forged in an intense pressure cooker of conservative insanity. They know they won’t win elections, but they fight anyway.

We (and our congressional buffoons) could learn a lot from them.

I need to read this every day
In future generations, when your children and grandchildren look back on this moment, they are not going to ask about the price of eggs. They are going to ask you what you did. Not what you felt. Not what you paid. But what you did. And I want to be able to say I did everything I possibly could.

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

People are pissed, and I get it. Trump and Republicans are flooding the zone to shake us up.

Elon Musk and his interns are meant to make us feel powerless when we’re not.

Keep calling. Call Republicans. Be specific about how these actions impact your lives.

Great stuff. Now tell the MN GOP to knock it off with the power grab and SEAT BRAD TABKE
The richest man in the world is sitting at the Resolute desk, about to defund your public school.

Trump should stop him.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I propose human hamster wheels at local parks!!

Heck, get one for the basement. Gotta be cheaper and longer lasting than a treadmill
In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts.

The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails.

The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

SEAT BRAD TABKE
The House GOP lost in the Supreme Court. Everything they were doing the last two weeks was unconstitutional. We all want to get back in working at the Capitol and need to agree on two things:

1) Don’t kick me out.
2) Share power if we’re tied.

Let’s work together!!

I choose to get the vapors over the GOP undoing an election in Shakopee that’s been recounted & adjudicated. That’s backsliding a democracy.
Ongoing Democratic backsliding in MN: A DFL lawmaker promoted a protest at the Capitol yesterday. The protestors subsequently went inside, disrupted proceedings, and shouted obscenities at GOP lawmakers.

In this day and age, living in a place that
- you like,
- you can afford,
- you can find a job,
- you have family/friends,
- you feel safe, and
- you *are* safe from natural disasters/bad laws/worse

is luxury and privilege. Almost no one gets to check all the boxes.

So maybe don’t be an asshole.

If you played an instrument back in high school and stopped: we are in a golden age of decent cheap instruments.

The guitars are better, the amps are better. The pedals are cheaper, the wind instruments are actually instruments and not just shaped like them, etc.

Jump back into it.

My grandparents's Stillwater Victorian was similarly destroyed in a flip. They painted all the paneling and woodwork white and made the first floor "open concept." $1.1M. No buyers. May as well skip the astronomical heating bills and get something new
It's a flip and they destroyed all the character in the house.

First news story I remember as a child:

John Lennon's assassination
The freeing of the hostages in Iran
President Reagan being shot
A house fire in Minneapolis that killed three (?) school age brothers
Thanksgiving fire of 1982 (?) that took out the Donaldson's Department store downtown Mpls
Not so much a news story but I remember the 1980 Moscow Olympics on TV. I was 6. And I remember Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher and (closer to home) Bob Hawke’s election as PM in 1983. I remember AIDS, and the early 80s recession, and the Cold War - Brezhnev’s death in 82.
What's the first major news story you remember as a child?

Challenger for sure. After that the next one I remember vividly was the Berlin Wall. Then the invasion of Kuwait. Obviously other things happened between those but I'm talking off the top of my head.

Really curious about Ukrainian answers.
