the word “education” is from the root educe which means “to bring forth”

education requires being challenged and questioned

two things chatgpt is designed to never ever do

you can, if you write a custom interface, get llms to ask questions. openai decided to never ever allow that even prompted
"telling ain’t teaching" is an excellent way of putting this. So much of teaching is about creating contexts that are both safe and challenging, where failure is a positive part of a project that's not the end, but a stepping stone, etc
telling ain’t teaching

even if it’s not making up 45%+ of what it says, which of course it is

Others have said it before, but if 'AI' was any good, they'd be charging us for it and we'd be happy to pay. Shoehorning it into every single aspect of people's lives just reeks of desperation.

Nobody wants this shit. Nobody.

The hostile reaction has been so pronounced, in fact, that it feels like a company announcing it would never force AI into its products would carve out a pretty good chunk of the market.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

My personal “Don’t give to the Salvation Army” story:
When I was homeless in 2019, the Salvation Army shelter refused to give me a bed (even though they were available), because I was on immunosuppressant meds and they didn’t want to be responsible or liable if I got more sick or died on premises. They’d rather I die on the street.
It’s dinner time for the police. Appears to be pizza from a Salvation Army van.

Broadview’s “free speech” curfew starts soon, at 6pm.

Whenever people discuss if ChatGPT should be used in education, it should be noted that OpenAI's board includes a a professor who sought advice from a pedophile on how to manipulate one of his mentees into having sex with him, and in those conversations they substituted her name with a racial slur.
OpenAI is among the handful of the most powerful non-governmental institutions in the world.

Larry Summers could get fully jettisoned from Harvard (hasn't yet happened!) and yet still be fine so long as he is helping determine the future of AI.

We're largely left with cancelling. So we do. Do we like it? Honestly, no. But telling readers that they should ignore major failures of news organization leadership - I'm sorry, but we shouldn't, and we shouldn't be asked to.

News outlets do, in fact, need readers to watch the watchdogs. And readers don't have many tools, especially at a paper that refuses to have a public editor like the NYT or one where the owner is hellbent on using the paper to cozy up to power, as at the WaPo.

Another reason to wear a well fitted respirator as well. Vaccines can help make an infection milder and help curb spread, but 😷 is a critical part of the equation
I got a COVID booster because I continue to see “healthy” people lose their health to COVID and don’t want to risk it happening to me
About 1 in 4 American adults got a covid vaccine shot during the 2024-25 virus season, a fraction health care experts warn could be smaller this year as millions wrestle with conflicting advice from the government and trusted medical orgs about the value of a shot. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...
