Here's the thing about this: It isn't a boycott really.

On one level I'm not travelling to the US because of moral objections, sure. But the really powerful factor for me is just a basic risk assessment. The American administration is clearly aggressively hostile to foreigners, and people like me.
New StatCan data:

*CANADA RETURN TRIPS BY CAR FROM US FELL 38.1% Y/Y IN MAY

*CANADA RETURN TRIPS BY AIR FROM US FELL 24.2% Y/Y IN MAY

U.S. wine export markets have contracted substantially. In April, the year-over-year export value dropped by 41.4%, worsening the 28% decline recorded in March. The three main export destinations for U.S. wine—Canada (-93%), the UK (-29%), and China (-70%)—all reported significant decreases.

New business ethics syllabus just dropped.
Shareholder theory v. Stakeholder theory playing out in real time.
OK honestly genuinely just from a philosophical point of view the Luigi murder might actually have the structure of a standard utilitarian thought experiment? Assuming that "aggressive anti-consumer" behaviour means, in this context, denying people access to healthcare, then it seems that...
"The group, which seeks...damages, argues that the public backlash prevented the company from pursuing "the aggressive, anti-consumer tactics that it would need to achieve" its earnings goals."

do you have a moment to discuss the Good News of dialectical materialism?

Canada also has a Senate, but literally the only interesting thing about it is the goofy carpet.

Like the United States, Canada also has a Supreme Court.

Unlike the United States, Canada's judges dress like Santa Claus. Also, the Supreme Court of Canada has an official owl mascot named Amicus.

I’d given a tiny piece of myself away. That can’t happen. I have too much to hide, and letting one piece go means the rest isn’t as protected.

My high school English teacher complained that students took otherwise acceptable pieces of writing, then poured a jar of spare commas all over the page. T***p does that with punctuation, especially upper case letters.
Trump just posted a new rant claiming the tariff exceptions on electronics announced late Friday aren’t actually exceptions and they’ll still get hit with tariffs.

"What could possibly go wrong", says councilor who, I assume, has never read/watched sci-fi.
"We don't use technology and artificial intelligence consistently. We are piloting it, but it really should be baked into the fabric of how we do business," says Councillor Myers.

Yes. Absolutely. This should be leading the news.
We need to spend more time on the fact that Vance made the Minister of Finance of Norway and Chair of the Munich Security Conference burst into public tears of despair.

This was the play all along.
Anyone who happened to know that the White House would announce and then suspend tariffs within 24 hours just made a boatload of money.

Now would be a great time for the left in Canada to have a serious, coherent agenda that seeks a structural transformation of material life in service of workers, rather than, you know, keyboard warrior emoji shit and first-year undergrad epithets.

Bank analysts: Our baseline assumes no face-eating

Leopard: Chomp chomp chomp
J.P. Morgan econs on Trump’s latest are “increasingly concerned that the policy mix may tilt into an unintentionally far less business-friendly stance. The sustained 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico set to start this weekend is materially different than the tariff increases built into our baseline.”

The real danger to Canada isn’t from the tariffs. It’s from the (unjustified, illegal) *threat* of tariffs.
We can adjust to any tariff. But *uncertainty* undermines the entire relationship. Retaliation can’t fix that. Only minimizing exposure to the US can.

Tariffs on Canada and Mexico coming Saturday, Trump says he’s deciding whether levy will hit oil
With a decision on oil imminent, the U.S. President repeated his three reasons for imposing tariffs: illegal migration, fentanyl smuggling across the border and imbalances on trade

Interesting thread.
A better trade agreement can’t fix this. The US has destroyed the shared values needed to sustain an integrated economy. We can mourn this needless catastrophe, but we have to recognize it and act accordingly. Otherwise, Trump will drag us down the same nihilistic path as the US.

1. Sabotage public institutions.

2. Claim they don’t work efficiently.

3. Eliminate them.

That’s the playbook.
