A summar of the legal news today (re: Comey and the Texas redistricting): Bad lawyers are bad, and they're worse if you chase out every good lawyer who could possibly help them be ok.

I’m a writing coach and love working with attorneys 1-on-1 on advanced skills, but am seriously thinking of offering a big shaming group class for AI hallucinations—like mandatory defensive driving after a reckless driving ticket. It’s punitive and annoying CLE for attys caught submitting fake cases
Are lawyers heeding warnings about hallucinated citations? There were at least 3 hallucinated citation cases JUST YESTERDAY 🤖😵

I really liked Barton Swaim’s Book The Speechwriter—loosely labeled “fiction” about a young speechwriter from a southern state working for a mysterious disappearing governor—and wonder what he’s thinking right now

Great job AI overview - thanks for this cutting-edge info that my favorite college football team did not play yesterday (they did) but will play today (they will not)

"The Cavalier Daily corresponded with former Rector Robert Hardie, whose term ended June 30, regarding the two accounts. He confirmed that he agreed with Ryan’s account.

'I concur fully with President Ryan’s recollection of events,' Hardie said."

Welp

Ryan and Sheridan provide full accounts of Ryan’s resignation. They differ significantly

Related to this, I have a pending FOIA request with UVA for the retainer agreement and billing records/invoices from McGuireWoods regarding UVA’s interactions with DOJ. It was filed on *July 2* and I still haven’t received a substantive reply. (The deadline is a maximum of 12 working days.)
Former UVA president Jim Ryan, who resigned over the summer due to pressure from the Trump Administration, just shared this 12-page letter with the Faculty Senate, detailing his experience with the Board of Visitors and DOJ.

It's a surreal--and troubling--read.

Jim Ryan's letter is not just surreal and troubling; it provides a series of deeply sobering lessons—about the perils facing public universities today; about what it means to "work with" this Department of Justice; & about what leadership does (and doesn't) entail at this especially fraught moment.

Joyce Carol Oates sitting across a desk from Kendrick Lamar:

"So I'm putting a team together..."

Isaac Chotiner knocks on the open door.
Personally, I will be trying to avoid the notice of Joyce Carol Oates and Kendrick Lamar for the rest of my natural life
I need Joyce Carol Oates to be mean to me online so I can get my life together

Dolly Parton releases “9 to 5” 45 yrs ago today.

“I knew what it was like to be a working woman trying to make a decent living, trying to be taken seriously. .. I wanted a song that sounded playful on the surface but spoke to that frustration .. A song about women .. saying, ‘We deserve better.’”

Ominous cue for @anthonymkreis.bsky.social meme about SCOTUS and a thriving (or at least surviving) modern society
Hard to overstate the lifeline this ruling offers in the face of Trump's calculated cruelty.

It will not only keep tens of millions—half of them kids—fed this month, but will also prevent the evictions and shutoffs that would have resulted from families being forced to pay for food out of pocket.

Friends, it’s time once again to explain why people do interviews with Isaac Chotiner.
It's less viral, but he's also good at interviews where he doesn't absolutely obliterate someone.

It's like getting a call from someone who is a professional chef but also an MMA fighter inviting you to "a thing at a warehouse" on a Tuesday night. Maybe it's food. Maybe you're getting choked out.
