But it's also knowing, despite this, there were a few among the framers who sought a diverse, equal, and inclusive society that blended culture and history. That being American means accepting everyone, graciously and gladly, sharing and blending cultures to show that all peoples of the world can coexist in one place and not worry about whether they belong, because they do. Being an American means belonging and letting people in. What do you believe citizenship involves? Recognizing our history and striving for a better tomorrow, whether through casual conversation, joining the military, serving a community, standing up for the rights of others, and defending all free people from fear. Do you think our system of government has worked well, for the most part? Why or why not? Maybe once upon a time. But gerrymandering and the Electoral College give entirely too much power to people who represent the smallest amount of the population. We do not wait days and weeks for ballots by horse-as soon as the telegraph was invented, we should have moved to popular vote. As more "lesser of two evil" options arose, we should have adopted rank-choice voting. And as good people running for people were usurped by corporate lobbyists creating career politicians, term limits should have been imposed on every office. We need more turnover and amendments. Capitalism is ruining life for the people who actually build it. Social democracy built on lifting every person to living safe, healthy, and comfortable lives should be priority. Of course we want our TVs and computers-they'd be a lot easier to buy if you didn't shell out for healthcare! Not everything should be a revenue generating venture. The Mail should get to where it's going on time, water should run contaminant free, and your broken arm should be casted, no money changing hands, just tax dollars at work. What are the main things you'd like to see done/changed to create "a more perfect union," which is what the founders said they were trying to do? End gerrymandering. Voting maps should not be jigsaw puzzle pieces sequestering off voters you don't want. Until all of us are represented, and our representatives are willing to work for every person in their district, no one is represented. What is the most important story about America today that you think isn't being told, and who should be at the center of it? America is big. It's hard and expensive to travel between states, much more other countries, and especially overseas. Our ability to organize protests and strikes is far more difficult than most other places in the world. Nothing like France's labor strikes or any sort of Arab Spring is going to happen here. Some of us want to! But for the vast majority of us, we do not have the resources to fight back, our wages are stagnate, and everything costs too much to try and plan beyond our personal lives. This is by design, we are being suppressed.

Re: gift money from a possibly toxic person: if they guilt you about it later, or expect some kind of return, they’re only proving themselves as transactional. Love and forgiveness cannot be bought, but money is important and if they’re not a dang freak about it, it can go toward reparations.

One approach I’ve seen that seems healthy to me is to consider it a down payment for reparations for the damage she’s doing you and those you care about. It doesn’t obligate you to anything, it doesn’t have to change your relationship. It’s a bigotry tax. Use it as you like.
