Rank and file union organizer, shop steward and bargaining rep. Takoma DC out of southern MD. Labor, politics, history. Opinions my own
US federal labor protections are basically "anything over 40 hrs/wk is OT (unless youre salaried), employers cant discriminate based on protected class (but best of luck if you ever are), and sure you can *try* to form a union if you reeeealllly want... everything else is kosher
Americans have an embarrassingly narrow list of formalised workers' rights and any yanqui who doesn't see that needs to simply read a translation of the Lithuanian Labour Code.

Judging by ads, theyre counting on the couple dozen or so jobs created by each new data center
What is the actual plan for this? AI magically starts producing new industries that don’t exist in the next three months? The unemployed who have never done construction work start doing construction work? Nothing is pointing in this direction, except for elite spending on tennis seats and gambling.

Here’s a nice thing on the Internet. Kilmar in his backyard, posting TikToks singing along to praise music, and people commenting with their protest signs when they demanded his freedom. 🙏

Sorta feel the same about "podcast" but I dont have a word to describe "me as an 8yo only child recording himself interview mom and dad on a tape deck"
not sure why I loathe the word "webinar" so much but

The National Trust is now suing the Trump administration, urging them to stop its White House ballroom construction.

But why is the president even pushing for this makeover in the first place?

According to @artcrimeprof.bsky.social, it's all about power.
Trump's gilded White House makeover is all about power
On this week’s “More To The Story,” art historian Erin Thompson examines the ways societies build and destroy monuments—and why Trump is so focused on remaking Washington in his own image.

Im very unfamiliar with the UK budget process but being over here during Budget Week, I can't help thinking Labour is the final boss of self-womping milquetoast western center-left parties...

On this, I'll agree with President Trump: If Congress eliminates the filibuster, DC statehood is inevitable
Trump: "They're gonna make DC a state and they're gonna make Puerto Rico a state. So now they pick up two states, four senators. They're gonna pick up electoral votes. It's gonna be a very, very bad situation. Now, if we do what I'm saying, they'll most likely never obtain power."

Glad as I am about tonight's results, after 2024 I am never ever ever again conflating midterm electorates with presidential electorates

Why is this hard
Came here to say this, but Jamelle Bouie has this covered. 👇
When the Democratic tent includes candidates like Spanberger and Mamdani, there is no crisis, or fight, for the party. IT’S A COALITION, NOT A POINT ESTIMATE.
i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist

Thinking about how the Biggest Strongest Manliest Men became grenadiers because they could throw ball good in the 18th century
sort of funny to think about when you see Pete Hegseth or people like him posting FUCKING BADASS videos of moving tires or whatever. the physical characteristics of what makes people effective soldiers in the age of gunpowder don't really map onto our ape brain preconceptions.

Not very satisfying to say but the most likely way to stop this is for his favorables to reach world historic lows, through self-owns, dems driving a narrative and more no kings protests

The thing about the far right 100 years ago and today is that they loudly have opinions about EVERYTHING (not just politics) and well.. it works
“throw everything at the wall and see what sticks and then push that” has been an enormously successful political strategy for Trump and I don’t understand why many Dems consider it anathema
in general i believe that high ranking democrats should not be trying to guess which stories will break through at all
