Screaming into the void

BREAKING — Mayor of Lewiston, Maine posts on FB that ICE is coming to the city imminently. This confirms my reporting the agency is planning a surge in the city and state generally.

Lewiston is home to a large Somali-American population, which made up 4.6% of the population as of the 2020 census.

New in PN: The dehumanization machine speeds up

"Months after the nation and world were appalled by George Floyd’s murder, it became an event with two different truths. With the killing of Good, the right has not even deigned to admit the heinousness of the event before deciding she had it coming."

Fuck this administration. Fuck their supporters. And fuck anyone who buys into their bullshit.
A 6-year-old just lost his mother. A woman was shot in the face in front of her wife.

The swift, lockstep attempt to dehumanize and villainize Renee Nicole Good might be the most depraved thing we've seen yet from these ghouls and their supporters. These people are utterly fucking dead inside.

I have what you may call an eclectic taste in music. I had Pandora playing in the background while trying to get back to work after reading the news out of Minneapolis. And Weird Al's song Trigger Happy came on.

The MAGA base has long been ok with othering groups because, for the most part, they're insulated from that othering. But I know some MAGA personally where this will hit home. Whether or not they turn a blind eye to it or dismiss it as "just words," we'll see.
“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

THEY PEPPER SPRAYED A BABY

Please read this entire excellent piece by Caroline, which points out that a judge ordered the Feds (again) to stop doing **this exact kind of thing** and they are still continuing to do it all over Chicago
Arianna Sofia Veraza and her parents were driving to Sam's Club for milk, eggs and diapers yesterday when they heard helicopters and horns blaring yesterday. They had turned around to leave when a federal agent pepper-sprayed them through a car window.

Southwest Side politicians condemned Saturday’s pepper spraying and the federal sweep of Little Village as “state-sponsored terrorism” at a news conference Sunday.

Defense says that the officer's testimony was "very questionable" because he said the sandwich both exploded in spray of mustard and onions and also landed in its wrapper on the ground.

On the way out from voting tonight, there was a woman collecting signatures for a petition to "keep boys out of girls' sports." I understand that's an issue that many people may find reasonable, but the reality is, it's a bigoted attempt to attack trans and intersex students. 1/4

The redemption story of a disillusioned veteran who shitposted some pretty abhorrent views on the internet to a man who found community, renounced those views, and worked hard to bring together the people of his state could have been inspirational. But a Nazi tattoo is disqualifying for a US Senator

Find a No Kings protest Saturday and go!

Don't worry that you've never been to a protest before. Don't worry about being dressed wrong or looking out of place. Don't worry that you don't agree about everything -- or even about much -- with lots of people at the protest.

Media framing the Gaza deal and other international affairs around Trump’s quest for the Nobel peace prize highlights how much news and public discourse have become warped around one man’s pathologies.

Whether he gets praise is one of the least important thing about this.

Me, in @msnbc.com:
Opinion | Trump’s Nobel peace prize campaign is the least important part of the Gaza deal
If the ceasefire holds, the administration deserves much credit. But the fixation on Trump getting a prize distracts from things that actually matter.

According to eyewitnesses, armed ICE agents dragged kids out of their beds in the middle of the night, zip tied them and put them in rented vans while raiding an * entire apartment building* on the South Side of Chicago.

This is the gulf of America that truly matters
There is a gulf in America. I submit it is the gulf between good and evil, or at least not-evil and evil.

The gulf is not just between people who oppose this and people who are indifferent to it or reluctantly accept it in support of immigration policy or see it as collateral damage.
