This is what I don’t get.
It consistently amazes me that so many modern authoritarians jump right to terror and oppression without even trying to gain popular support by making life better for the population. Even Hitler had a whole program of improvements and benefits to buy support, not just genocide and terror.

It would be so righteous if the next president rebuilt the East Wing precisely as it was before the vandalism, incorporating practical modernizations throughout
Demolishing the East Wing of the White House before finalizing plans for what will be built above its ruins is a near-perfect metaphor for Trump's approach to economic policy. The only difference is the wrecking crew doesn’t claim the rubble is evidence of unprecedented growth.
