The experience of modernity is basically seeing the world get constantly worse and being told by people in power they can't do anything about it and that you're a bitch for wanting them to try.
Is it actually that Russian air defence failed, or was it just not active lol. Given that Venezuela were begging China to come fix it in like June?

Obviously, this is immoral, illegal, etc. but also, I want to stress, it's the same strategy that failed in Iraq.
Trump: "We're going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."

It may sound dumb tomorrow!
this tweet will look bad when they invade for real in like a month.

Has there ever been a more thoroughly vindicated political opinion than "America bad" though
January 3, 2026 at 3:58 PM
The basic problem right now is that there isn't really any centre of power globally willing to oppose the USA if it throws its weight around.
January 3, 2026 at 4:04 PM
this is definately sounding more like they're going to invade, or at least do more raids, the issue for America of course is how are they going to affect who governs Venezuela with air strikes or raids, because like, raids are actually fairly easy to counter.
FOX & FRIENDS: What do you think is next for the Venezuelan people now that you have removed Maduro so he can face American justice?

TRUMP: Well, we're making that decision now. We can't take a chance on letting somebody else run it, just take over where he left off. So we're making that decision

The thing about stuff like this is it probably won't have any direct, viewable downsides for the international order... but cumulatively, it represents another push towards like, global war and the law of the jungle.

"No regime change wars" *monkey paw curl*

I really do think that a lot of this, from the obsession with daring raids to the overly personal approach to leadership goes back to call of duty
January 3, 2026 at 1:33 PM
Like what are they going to do if thus just doesn't do anything?
January 3, 2026 at 1:09 PM
The call of dutyifcation of us foreign policy now in full swing

Whenever all these sage political commentators talk about how unfair it is that normie politicians, unlike populists, have to engage with the complexity of the real world, worth remembering how little appetite they actually have for doing the right thing when it might be unpopular
reminder that shamima begum was a literal child when she was groomed into isis and the uk is a racist hellpit
Begum may be 'distasteful', but it is pretty clear she was a victim of grooming and trafficking. The decision to make her defacto stateless is also clearly incompatibile with the principles of international law. Labour doubling down doesn't change that it is bad. 1/2

There’s also this fucking trope of “the dumb public want immediate results”. Firstly, if your entire campaign is based on the promise of change, that’s on you. Secondly, the public would be fucking delighted to have not had the immediate results of attacking the most vulnerable people in the country

None of the things listed are actual beliefs of centrism except maybe a commitment to order over chaos.
I’d 100% agree that centrism is near-fanatically committed to “order”, if we understand that concept as “the barely limited capacity of quite specific people and powers to impose their will upon lesser ones, while receiving deference and gratitude”. The rest, well: maybe, but highly conditional.

Sure, but what they *meant* by this was: we view any kind of meaningful opposition to right wing politics beyond “You’re not doing it hard and nasty enough” as dumb, infantile student politics for wankers.

Mel - quoted in the manifesto of a fascist mass shooter who murdered seventy seven people, including a large number of teenagers he specifically targeted as children of socialists - says incitement to murder is disqualifying. Every day, these papers are rubbing everyone’s faces in their impunity.

Ukraine really is basically if Czechoslovakia decided to fight in WW2, stopped Hitler cold, fought them to a bloody stalemate over the next several years, and Britain and France still didn't use this time to do anything.

Bear in mind that we had a month of defeated Labour MPs on TV after the election, loudly squawking about how the wrong type of people were threatening democracy itself by voting for candidates who beat them. All this will be pushing at an open door.

It’s incredibly dangerous, obviously malicious stuff. It’s only a hop, skip and a jump from this, to: “extremist” ethnic populations protesting is intimidating and threatening Britons; “extremists” voting is threatening democracy; “extremists” being here at all is a threat to all white people.

I've been doing this as a comedy bit for years, but I do believe it; before I die, I will see the establishment of a Royal Commission on Britain's failure to attract sufficient immigration, and many of today's broadsheet ethnonationalists will be on it
