This is stunning. Listen to this in Philadelphia.

Thousands singing “Hey-Oh, we won’t be silent while our friends are gunned down.”

Really listen to it.

Very glad to contribute to this review on #bioinvasions #InvasiveSpecies 🧪🌍🌐 #Non-native species

With researchers across the globe, we synthesize nearly a century of evidence across taxa and ecosystems to clarify what #invasion #impacts are, how they arise, and why they are hard to assess.

If you're American, cisgender, and think of yourself an ally to trans people, please consider reading this piece by @evanurquhart.bsky.social. Nothing in there is new, exactly, but if you want to understand the sheer scale of the attack against trans people in the US over the last year, read it
The Year We Lost Everything — Assigned
An authoritarian government, a captured press and cowardice at the head of most major institutions led to a year of losses for trans people’s safety and equality in the US.

I think this is a really important point. When folks say "no AI" they often don’t mean "I can conceive of no possible use for AI"—they mean "the use cases I’ve been shown do not begin to justify the harms"—that’s not something you respond to by offering another narrow use case
So when I say there is *zero* utility for LLMs, I don't mean there are zero use cases. I mean there are zero use cases that even begin to make up for the damage that's being done.

“All evolutionary biologists know that variation itself is life’s only irreducible essence”—Gould

Evolutionary biology is the study of how complicated and diverse life can be; the field has its jerks, but a good evolutionary biologist learns pretty fast that life doesn’t like boundaries or binaries
Hey, fellow evolutionary biologists:

If you support trans rights, like, comment, or repost this. I want to show that transphobes like Richard Dawkins are a loud minority that does not represent our community
And that’s a follow.

Actually I do have a question if you have a sec.

Without exception the most transphobic group of scientists I’ve run into online are evolutionary biologists. Every single one of them has expressed the same opinion: transness cannot be anything other than social contagion. Why?

One day left!
If you were considering submitting an abstract for SCAS/IAGLR for our EDI session but didn't because you were only allowed to give one talk, you are now allowed to submit a second talk for sessions 7-11! (We're #10 🤓)

And you still have 2 days left to submit an abstract!

Alberta Lawmakers have invoked the nonwithstanding clause to stop trans youth from accessing care.

In doing so, they blocked a provision that grants trans youth the "right to life," which was used to overturn their ban.

My dogs do not believe in alone time. That's the loneliest time, after all. Nobody should be alone in the bathroom. No. They will simply flop down in the shower until you finish whatever you're doing. Take your time. Muffin will maintain eye contact the entire time so your eyes don't get lonely. o_o

Shortly after I came out as trans, @katta.bsky.social introduced me to the concept of Epistemic Exploitation, and it has haunted me ever since.
"Epistemic exploitation occurs when privileged persons compel marginalized persons to educate them about the nature of their oppression."

✨alright big day of giving a few thousand dollars of stuff away yesterday. thank you all again, so much for getting in on the fun. we couldn’t be more proud of you.

it’s unfortunately time for us to try and pay our own bills now.

so, hey, buy some stuff? it’s really cool stuff. ✨
good morning, beautiful people!

it's ✨Shameless Self Promotion Saturday✨ once again

buy some stuff if you want. help us pay bills if you can. tell a friend if you're willing.

either way, have a good weekend.
