Honoring some of my ancestors and a sibling, aunt, niece and uncles on this Veterans Day. I also thank those ancestors who served in the Union Army and the American Revolutionary War. Hat tip to all of my friends--and those I don't know--who served as well!

Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.

Told my husband "Do not leave leaf bags by the sidewalk on weekends." Perfect kick targets for the ruffians that walk by here at night. He didn't believe me. (And before you go all "Don't rake!" on me we leave about 1/3 of what comes off our 19 trees. Otherwise they mold and kill the grass & plants)

Bummer to read that SeatGuru is gone (not that I'm flying anytime soon). AeroLopa is an alternative for at least showing if your row has no window, but it has no PAX reviews or notes about seats to avoid. The good news is you can bookmark this archive for SeatGuru: web.archive.org/web/20251010...

Ahhh. It might not feel as good as that first shower and shampoo after a long wilderness trip, but my first one since surgery 6 days ago sure felt good.

A not surprising story by Emily Schwing with @propublica.org about Alaska's long-neglected rural schools. “It is a known fact that if you need to evacuate, you evacuate to the elementary school.” The problem is a long history of avoidance by GOP leaders and the voters who put them in charge.

Decades of neglect exact a toll on facilities that serve as safe havens and community gathering places." The story is about how the neglected schools in remote villages have served as emergency shelters after Typhoon Halong flooded and destroyed their homes. Most of those people had to be evacuated because the schools have such a backlog of maintenance needs the buildings were unsuitable for habitation, let alone as schools. A paragraph from the article: "The state is required by law to fund construction and maintenance projects in rural school districts because they serve unincorporated communities where there is no tax revenue to help fund education. In the last 28 years, Alaska’s rural school districts have made close to 1,800 requests to the state for money to maintain and repair deteriorating schools, but only 14% of those requests have been approved. And as the backlog of major maintenance projects continues to grow, the state budget has been shrinking."

I chuckled seeing these this morning, in large part because the pole is across the street from our Maga neighbor who got creamed in the recent city council race. I'm surprised she hasn't run her Trump flag back up her pole yet (she took it down when she announced her campaign).

One more Halloween yard decor I liked this year, probably because I love the movie Beetlejuice. Then my husband caught two Bobs on the street that evening.

I forgot to share a few more fun Halloween decorations from our neighborhood. This one depicting the PBS painter Bob Ross made me laugh.

Just saw the first Anna's Hummingbird of the season at our feeder. It's crazy that they overwinter in places like Boise and even SE Alaska now. The northward expansion of the winter range is a relatively new phenomenon. Photo from several years ago.

What an unexpected treat to have a friend from Alaska stop by for a chat! Darla (middle) is crazy tough Idaho-to-Alaska girl, having started her fire service career as a smokejumper and Helitack crew member. We handled dogs together for the Iditarod start a few times--great memories!

Boise-area peeps who feed birds: here's a way to stock up on seed and support our great nature center. You can pre-order seed until November 21. Message me and I can email you the form.
The MK Nature Center will host its 19th annual bird seed sale Dec. 5-6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at 600 S. Walnut St., Boise next to Idaho Fish and Game Headquarters. Come and stock up on food for your favorite backyard birds. Proceeds from this event benefit educational programs, and day-to-day operations at the nature center. High quality bird seed, including black-oil sunflower, sunflower chips, nyjer thistle, several blended seed mixes, and seed bells will be available. Family-friendly activities will also take place on Saturday, Dec. 6, with live bird presentations with our peregrine falcon Wilson, and a take-home kid’s craft. The presentations will be at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The kid’s craft will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contact sue.dudley AT idfg.idaho.gov with questions.
