I got a cheap go-pro and made a quick shrimping tutorial.

Is this something people would like to see more of? I would greatly appreciate suggestions!

Happy Monday. Have an antlion. I think you'll agree that they have very pretty eyes.

Bug and I were very pleased when a couple of these giant bee-flies hovered around us on the trail, completely unaware of how much delight the bipeds were getting out of their existence

Chonk. Imperial moth portrait. I love the way it looks like there are little bows at the base of its antennae.

The Velvet-purple Coronet is a fantastic Colombian hummingbird, but this individual was just spectacular. The sun was coming up behind me after a morning of rain and the bird perched for me, glowing in the early light.

It’s #weevilwednesday! I don’t think anyone around here celebrates but I’ll still post because maybe I’ll make it a thing. It’s worth it. Weevils are amazing. #bugsky 🌿

While the vast majority of my #EmotionalSupportSpood entries are salticids, Geolycosa (burrowing wolves) absolutely have their place. Enjoy this lovely lass peering from her burrow.
Goodnight y'all 🖤

East coast Australia cicadas making me jealous again!

Also, invert common names are the best.
Four different species here - I had five but the Black Prince flew away. None of these #cicadas are restrained by the way, cicadas are just genuinely this chill. Green Grocer, Red Eye, Floury Baker and Razor Grinder.

(1/2) Not all little red mites are created equal 🙏 (they're ALL super cute tho)

To illustrate some of the diversity of trombidiform mites - here are representatives from four different families:

1 Calyptostomatidae ❤️
2 Trombiculidae 🧡
3 Trombidiidae 🔴
4 Microtrombidiidae 🍷

Here's a stunner for #FossilFriday, just look at that beetle's preserved wing case! It belongs to a group called frog-legged leaf beetles (so-named for their extra-juicy rear legs), paleontologists called its pattern "the most perfectly preserved pigment-based colouration known in fossil beetles" 🧪
49 million-year-old beetle looks like it was squashed yesterday
Paleontologists named the insect "Attenborough's Beauty," after Sir David Attenborough.

This is one of those photos that you can't quite believe really happened. I encountered this grey gray owl (1 of 2) on my way home from town. It was so focussed on hunting, that I could stand to the side and watch. I didn't have my camera set to continuous shutter, so I'm stunned this came out. 🪶🌿

Came across 3 silly Mourning Scorpionflies (Panorpa lugubris) this evening, which made me very happy.
The annual appearance of these Snootflies in the fall is a state holiday, I'm pretty sure
