Let’s finish the year with something beautiful. Treehoppers in the genus Metacalfia. A mom and her babies. They have such unexpected colors when seen up close. The mom in on the left of the first image. 🌱

This amazing creature is Stylocentrus rubrinigris. It’s very tiny. I’ve been watching it and I’ve figured it’s preferred host plant so now I can look for nymphs to photograph. My observation of this species on @inaturalist.bsky.social is one of two. That’s always such a thrill. 🌱

As much effort as Apple put into Plur1bus, why didn’t they find an actor from Uruguay? All I had to hear was the way he said “hijueputas” over the phone in episode 2 to know he was Colombian.

Last night of Chanukah. This is the menorah my grandfather made from the wood of one of the crates in which he carried his belongings when le fled Germany in the 30s. The little candle is to observe his yahrtzeit.

May Jake Paul enjoy his liquid diet for the next 6 weeks. May his teeth be so mossy on the inside he wears down his tongue. May he replay that final punch every time he closes his eyes for years to come.

People are choosing between food, meds, rent, etc and these already super wealthy people are squeezing even more out of them.

For years now, when I get a new follower on instagram, I look at their content. If they seem in any way MAGA or promoters of scientific misinformation, I block them. More recently I started blocking anyone who posts AI slop.

They don’t deserve to see the beautiful bugs I shoot.

I was not aware that #macroMonday was a thing here! I loved it way back when there was a very active group on Flickr that set a theme each week. Well, here’s my first macro Monday in ages. A leafhopper nymph in the genus Amblyscarta. 🌱

Not in the picture: the people who actually did any work.

Not that I’m glad anyone did it in the first place.

And if AI did this, why bother in the first place? It’s so weird and awkward.
I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork

Two moths. Distant cousins. On the left, genus Opisthoxia. On the right, Phrygionis platinata. 🌱

My youngest was rear-ended by a dude driving a monster-truck-like jeep thing. Expired license, no insurance. Tried to talk J into driving “down the road to the gas station and get some cash out of the ATM to fix your car” but I taught him better. It’s a proud moment when your kid adults successfully

It’s amazing how far people will bend to excuse a racist rant when they are trying to fit in with the racist crew and deflect all racist attention to people slightly darker than them. This should not have been published.
I wrote about why we should not celebrate someone losing their job, especially in today’s America, even when they’ve done terrible racist things.

Losing a job should also be harder and involve workers’ bodies not unilateral management decisions.

Why the Cinnabon Story Doesn’t Make Me Happy
The left should be promoting working-class solidarity, not delighting in seeing workers summarily dismissed.

I found this bug on my front door. Turns out it’s an elusive Bulbocornis sp. No known host plant, no collected specimens. Just a few pix like mine. So proud I sat down on the step while on the phone. Would have missed it otherwise. Will collect if I see another. 🌱

How it started, how it’s going 😬

Insects are excellent at hiding in plain sight. I often take pix of twigs only to realize they are just that. But sometimes the hunch pays off and I get to see a lovely little larva. Extra points for the alliteration 🌱

As much as I love soccer I will not watch a single match of the World Cup this year. Nobody associated with something so wrong deserves my attention or my money. And I hope more teams choose not to attend

Ecology without class struggle is gardening.

-Chico Mendes

I think of this quote when I think of how “nice” neighborhoods require manicured lawns, which require tons of herbicides and fertilizers.

My little friend along the driveway is so used to me taking pix she doesn’t flinch any more. She’s been there since hatching and I expect she’ll undergo her final molt in the next week. A mantis in the genus Tithrone 🌱

And if you have any power, even in a small, limited sphere like as a teacher in your own classroom, advocate for and practice universal design that can mitigate discomfort and limitation for people with disabilities, esp not visible or not diagnosed.
To reiterate, it’s really obvious the OP *isn’t* disabled.

You know they’ve never filed accommodation paperwork before because most of those require a diagnosis *plus* additional paperwork.

Even with college exams, it’s near impossible to just walk in and get extra time on a test by asking alone.

“I think we should have a system of intense shame and ridicule for people who try to use accommodations when they don’t need them.”

Nah, all that does is cause people to be suspicious of people who actually need said accommodations.

On this topic, fraud is so rare— it’s negligible.

The items selected are that weird because they’re random placeholders. They’re still searching for someone with a heart among the family and administration.
Christmas decorations at the White House, which were personally selected by first lady Melania Trump, aim to reflect the American spirit of generosity, patriotism and gratitude under the theme: "Home is Where the Heart Is." bit.ly/4pjksLW
