Brilliant summary of the AI situation. It's sort of the inevitable extension of the 'brain as big computer' misleading metaphor. The idea that more compute will get us closer to a brain. FFS we don't even really have a clue how the cerebellum works and that's >half of ALL THE CELLS IN YOUR BRAIN.
The simple reality of gen-AI/LLMs is that this is all a lot of hand waving to attempt to get to AGI before the bubble pops. But the chasm between what these models churn out now and what a human-equivalent intelligence could create with skill is larger than the Pacific.

- 95% of consumer AI stuff is currently either pointless, too early, or bad
- remaining 5% is so good that it needs to be taken seriously
