What does Stanford women’s basketball look like if it actually went forward with a national head coaching search after Tara retired

Megan is right to call this out, but to take it a step further: Male athletes seem to be “over” athlete activism. Now that women’s sports have true nat’l/global exposure, it’s their “job” to be activists now. Some clear racial lines here too.

Sports as a cultural institution doesn’t care to fight.
attn: everyone asking why athletes aren’t speaking out on Minneapolis, please meet two-time MVP, three-time world champion, three-time Olympic gold medalist Breanna Mackenzie Stewart.

Need a lot of people in the state of Oregon to read the blow
I will simply never recover from reading this sentence:

"Since Georgia implemented work requirements in 2020, they have spent twice as much on Deloitte consultants and administrative costs as on healthcare for people."
Today, Luke Farrell (@lukef.bsky.social) explains how complex eligibility requirements have turned America’s safety net into a lucrative revenue stream for monopolistic private contractors.

Maybe this is maudlin but I feel like we need some type of Oscars montage for the posters we lost this year. Guys like Dan McQuade, Mike Fossey and Kaleb Horton contributed so much to online culture, but everything about it is so impermanent. People need to know who they were.

Alex Pretti’s execution hits home for me. Like Alex, I have a background in critical care nursing. Also like Alex, I’m someone who has spent a lot of time protesting in the streets.

Today, I’m more certain than ever that ICE must be abolished.

I wonder when the Broncos decided to go for it instead of kicking a field goal in the first quarter, did they know this storm was coming in the second half or that it would be this bad?

On Deni Avdija, Gaza and the responsibility we project on athletes to take a stand.

“It’s not just that he has a right not to speak out. To speak out in any way puts him in an impossible situation.”

More ammunition for my argument that the least understood institution in America is county government

(The below post is DEFINITELY true of Marion County, Oregon, which is run by three unaccountable Christofascists & employs a county attorney who does personal work for them on the taxpayer dime.)
One of my observations from posting about detention centers is that many county officials are signing contracts with ICE despite public protest from local residents.
'Why aren't they in the streets' is answered almost every day in my small town by people in the streets! Rather than asking 'why aren't they in the streets' it's worth asking 'why isn't your media showing them in the streets' and 'who is served by downplaying resistane in its myriad forms.'

Oregonians must consider the possibility that Marie Gluesenkamp Perez LIKES that ICE is immiserating and torturing Oregon residents and is willing to fund the continued practice toward personal political gain
DHS spending bill passed 220-207

7 Democrats voted in favor:
Henry Cuellar
Don Davis
Laura Gilles
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez
Jared Golden
Vicente Gonzalez
Tom Suozzi

Massie voted No
Andy Harris didn't vote

Might not have passed if every Democrat voted No, but leadership wasn't whipping them to do so

I once had a discussion with our mayor — a member of chair of several highly important transit boards in Oregon — about restricting car traffic on certain city streets.

She told me that cars NEEDED FULL ACCESS to streets, as if impeding their flow was violating an immutable law of nature.
Why are transit agency boards comprised of local elected officials, almost none of whom use transit nor see it as anything more than a temporary subsidy for those too poor to afford a car? At the very least, these should be directly elected positions so that people who use transit can govern it.
L.A. Metro, the main transit operator for Los Angeles, just voted to oppose SB 79, a law legalizing the construction of housing near stations. You can't make this stuff up. Legislators should remember this the next time they come to Sacramento begging for more money.

Is this when we bring up that WWeek found out that nearly 90 percent of all PPB agents have out-of-state driver’s licenses, including states like Virginia and Florida
It would be so cool if the Portland Police Bureau (or literally any other city agency) actually enforced license plate & registration requirements.

There is no reason we must accept plateless unidentifiable ICE goons playing bumper cars across our city while kidnapping our neighbors.
