Okay if you are a Donna Tartt fan, you simply must listen to this. Not only does he nail it, he ALSO DOES HER VOICE.

If you are a Heated Rivalry fan but not a Donna Tartt fan this will make absolutely no sense

Lovely piece on the hatefulness of all this. Worth it for many little highlights, but I enjoyed the riff on a calculator that aggressively suggests sums you might want to do today.
In what's now become an annual tradition, I've written another piece for The Gist about how and why I hate A.I.

On a bubble about to burst, a future rotted to its core, and the limits of the Mrs Doyle Theory of artificial intelligence.

Dreamed that I spent hours cycling around street markets searching for the right foodstuffs for my housemate’s pet Hispanolian solenodon. It ended up accepting a diet of pate and plumeria flowers, after which I had a heated argument with my housemate who insisted it was “just a fancy rat”

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

A bunch of NZ MPs were asked about their holiday reading recs by the Herald today. Turns out it's the Greens who are the nerds with good taste.

I once had the honour of being on a judging panel for a hugely esteemed literary prize. We read without knowing ANY biographical details of the authors, including their names. Afterwards it turned out that many many white men were in the running. None of them were winners.

In the midst of utter festive chaos am singing DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS in tribute to Mr Rea AND Rao and Adam from Prophet. It's Rao's go-to Christmas song (in matters of celebration and opportunities for a good time, he's resolutely multi-faith) and Adam has Very Complicated Feelings about it.
