There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Let’s talk about what this actually means. 🧵

Really wish people would stop talking about the problem with Science under Trump as “budget cuts”.

No. Budgets are set deliberatively by elected members of congress. Budgets haven’t been cut.

What’s happening are *purges* and *censorship*.

We will root out conflicts of interest, prioritize impact instead of commissions, and ensure all spending aligns with our values and mission.

this week’s BASKETBALL FEELINGS is about the “eye test”, its limits and how it’s become code for being stupid

plus: the slur of “casual” and why storing up stats for their own sake doesn’t make us smarter, just more anxious

The limits of the "eye test", the slur of being a "casual", and why interpreting basketball by the numbers still comes down to our gut.

This sort of democratic backsliding, where Republicans seek to overturn the effect of an election by reallocating powers away from positions they have lost, has become almost routine now. But it should remain shocking.
Heads up:

North Carolina Republicans just voted to strip the state's incoming Democratic governor and attorney general of key powers — passing a sweeping bill before the GOP most likely loses its veto-proof supermajority in the Legislature next year.

Feels like both Donny and Darius are getting out of some of the things that have been working well this year and not getting the ball up the court very quickly. They have been working really hard on D though.

@boghuma.bsky.social Hi! You seem like the right person to ask: why does the flu vaccine wear off? I always thought vaccines wore off because of the mutation rate of viruses but then I hear people saying to put off getting a flu vaccine until late October because then protection will last through 1/

Environmental movements should lead with tangible air quality improvements and let decarbonization be the side benefit. Many civilians value cleaner air (eg, people with asthma, who exercise, have kids or aging parents, etc) but think climate change, though serious, is fairly distant and abstract.
NEW PAPER: Decarbonization isn't just about climate—it's also about public health. We find that economy-wide CO2 reductions can lead to widespread improvements in air quality and health benefits, ranging from $65 billion to $250 billion annually by 2035.
