Befristungen sind auch Achillesferse für unbefristet Beschäftigte. Da befristete Verträge einfach auslaufen u nicht nachbesetzt werden können, bedeutet das für unbefristet Beschäftigte, dass diese Arbeit zusätzlich auf sie umgelagert wird. Sie werden also zusätzlich arbeiten müssen.

Striking C4 BC rhyton/drinking vessel w Actaeon metamorphosing into a stag.
In common version of myth, it's his penalty for having seen Artemis/Diana bathing naked: he's fated to be torn apart by dogs.
From Timmari Hill tombs; in archaeology museum, Matera Basilicata.
Forming lower part of rhyton is head of mythical Actaeon, with antlers growing through his thick hair, large wide eyes, straight nose, smallish mouth. Upper part is red figured ware on black background. A figure there is seated, with flowing stole flying behind, holding a shallow bowl.

Between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, grasshoppers seem to have been pretty fashionable amongst the subjects carved on #intaglios.

An extraordinary discovery was made in Ibiza: a 30-centimeter wooden sculpture representing Hercules. Considering the scarcity of wooden sculptures preserved from the Roman era, this discovery is truly remarkable.
The figure was found in a Roman well that was later reused as a refuse pit. 🧵1/2

Floating up from the darkness of late antiquity is this #opussectile #octopus from the #domus of #PortaMarina in #OstiaAntica, now in the #MuseodelleCiviltà in #Rome. This sea creature in giallo antico comes from somewhere in the famous opus sectile room, dating from 385-388 CE. #MosaicMonday 🏺
This delightful cephalopod in giallo antico was found in a pile of similar loose pieces of cut stone on the floor of the opus sectile hall of the domus of Porta Marina. Evidently they had never been installed, as they had no trace of the adhesive material (bitumen) that held such pieces to the wall. Was this house abandoned before it was finished, or did the design plans change midway? It is certainly hard to place this octopus in the decorative program of the room. On the tentacles, the suckers are clearly indicated, and there are two eyes on the main body, with a rather irregularly inscribed line within the main body, outlining most of it but creating a concave curve between the eyes, giving this octopus a worried frown.

The right short side of this sarcophagus of Protesilaos & Laodameia shows the Tartaros with Sisyphos, punished by externally rolling a stone up the hill, Ixion tied to an eternally spinning wheel, and Tantalos who couldn't drink the water.
The short side of the sarcophagus shows Sisyphos, naked, kneeling and holding a large stone over his head. Followed by Ixion, also naked, his arms tied to a large wheel, and on the right Tantalos bringing the water to his mouth, which runs down between his fingers.

#ReliefWednesday shows us the rich #relief work of the #cinerary #urn of one C. Iulius Saecularis, from c. 90 CE. The nude youth, a bit chubby, holds a #butterfly in his right hand, symbol of the #spirit. He doesn't want to let go of his earthly life. #Dionysiac symbols abound. #AncientBluesky 🏺
This white rectangular cinerary urn front was first noted in the Villa Giulia in its heyday, and found its way into the Borghese collection from which it was acquired by the National Roman Museum in 1893. It's a densely carved, rather beautiful relief crammed full of imagery. The youth, unfortunately emasculated by time, stands in a scallop-shell niche, which is usually an allusion to Venus, when the figure is female. He's wearing a lacerna or half cloak but is otherwise heroically nude. He is dressed for his trip to the Underworld. He's looking to his right (our left), his hands raised to chest level. In his right hand he holds a butterfly, symbol of the spirit, and in his left a tiny bird, possibly a peacock or even a parrot. At his feet are a dog and a monkey, symbols of attachment to earthly life. The vegetation on either side of the niche allude to the Underworld: olive, vine, and pine. At right a tall candelabrum culminates in a plaque with a Gorgoneion, an apotropaic protector.

Central part of the front side of the sarcophagus: open door, Herakles with lion skin over his head and club in his right hand, steps out of the door. In his left hand, he holds the leash with Kerberos whose three heafs peek out of the door. Underneath the door are stairs. Photo of the complete sarcophagus. In the middle is the open door to the underworld, left and right are two strigillated panels. On the corners are two winged erotes holding up prey. The front of the lid is decorated with garlands held by putti. The central panel for an inscription is empty. The acroteria at the corners are filled with grieving erotes.
