#OTD in #Roman history: two young lives lost, nearly 200 years apart. Britannicus died on 11 Feb AD55, aged 13, son of #Claudius —allegedly poisoned by #Nero. In AD244 Emperor Gordian III died aged 19, possibly in battle or murdered by his own troops. Power in #Rome was rarely kind to the young.🏛️

In ancient #Rome #mosaic making was a very long process that needed patience & precision. The tesserae were cut one by one & then carefully placed to create geometrical patterns or other subjects. The final result was a stunning floor or wall decoration that would have shown the wealth of the owner.

#IronAgeWednesday: #Brochs - Stone structures found particularly in NW #Scotland, built throughout the Iron Age. #Archaeologists have long debates about their purpose & use. Happy #Imbolc 🌟
Beginning on 1 Feb, Imbolc marks the transition toward spring, with roots that may reach back to the Neolithic. The festival is linked to #Brigid , also associated with Brigantia, whom the #Romans connected with Minerva & Victory, & who later passed into Christianity as St Brigid.
