#Harry the #Roman has visited #Piercebridge ! 🛡️ The fort sits on the County Durham side of the River Tees, the bridge on North Yorkshire. Built along #DereStreet , the fort was established by the 3rd century AD, garrisoned by auxiliary troops, & controlled this key northern frontier crossing.

Many are aware of the devastation that the eruption of Mount #Vesuvius had on the #Roman cities of #Pompeii & #Herculaneum in AD79 but fewer know about the #earthquake that hit Pompeii on 5 #Feb AD62. The earthquake caused major damage & may have been a precursor to the later eruption.

#IronAgeWednesday: #Brochs - Stone structures found particularly in NW #Scotland, built throughout the Iron Age. #Archaeologists have long debates about their purpose & use. Were they purely defensive or similar to stately homes, or perhaps a mix of defence & living quarters with symbolic functions?

#OTD AD211 #SeptimiusSeverus died in Eboracum (modern York) after a brutal campaign through #Caledonia. His ashes were then brought to Rome. His son Caracalla withdrew the borders back to the Hadrian's Wall, permanently. Severus was born in Leptis Magna & his wife was Julia Domna.

Happy #Imbolc 🌟
Beginning on 1 Feb, Imbolc marks the transition toward spring, with roots that may reach back to the Neolithic. The festival is linked to #Brigid , also associated with Brigantia, whom the #Romans connected with Minerva & Victory, & who later passed into Christianity as St Brigid.

Happy Februarius! Originally the last month of the #Roman year, February -the shortest month - later became the second month after calendar reforms. Named for februa, rites of purification, it was a time of cleansing & transition before renewal in March.

#Harry has returned to #Coria (Corbridge), a key #Roman supply base & crossroads just S of Hadrian’s Wall. Streets, granaries & workshops reveal how the frontier was organised & sustained. The #Corbridge Hoard, buried around AD 122, offers rare insight into Roman military life. 👀

A clip of the Carrickstone #Roman Altar in Cumbernauld, #Scotland. This intriguing stone is around 2,000 years old & is a scheduled ancient monument. Legend states it was used as a rallying point for Robert the Bruce & where he planted his banner before the Battle of Bannockburn.

Our #hillfortswednesday video this week shows #Torwoodlee Broch, the remains of an #IronAge hillfort near Galashiels, in the Scottish Borders. The #broch was first excavated by James Curle, who also excavated Trimontium and a number of #Roman items were found within the site.

#LegoDay 🧱🏛️
One of our all-time favourite #LEGO sets: the #Colosseum. With 9,036 pieces, it was the biggest LEGO set when it launched in 2020 — and it’s packed with brilliant #Roman details.
Sadly no longer available, but still iconic.

Classical writers tell us that Caledonian bears appeared in the Colosseum’s opening games in AD 80 — just as Roman power was only beginning to push into #Caledonia .

#Emperor #Nerva died of natural causes #OTD 98AD, at 67. Chosen by the Senate after Domitian's assassination; emperor for 16 months. Considered moderate & wise, his greatest success was adopting #Trajan as his heir ensuring a peaceful transition of power.
He was the first of the #FiveGoodEmperors

Today marks the death of #Emperor #Nerva in 98AD, aged 67. Chosen to lead by the Senate after Domitian's assassination, he was emperor for just 16 months before dying from natural causes. Nerva was the first of the Five Good Emperors.

This #Roman #gravestone comes from #Ardoch Roman Fort, Scotland. Dating to AD80-100, it reads "To the spirits of the departed Ammonius, son of Damio, #centurion of the First Cohort of Spaniards, of 27 years service. His heirs had this erected". #Hunterian Museum Collection.

#Harry at #Birdoswald #RomanFort (Banna). One of the largest forts on #HadriansWall – stretches of the original turf wall survive -early AD120s. Garrisoned by auxiliaries, including the First Cohort of Dacians. Excavations show granaries, barracks, workshops, altars, inscriptions & everyday objects.

#OTD 24 Jan AD41 — A day of #Roman drama: #Emperor #Caligula was stabbed to death in the cryptoporticus beneath Rome’s imperial palaces by the Praetorian Guard. He was 28. A descendant of Augustus & Mark Antony, his wife & infant daughter were also killed. His uncle #Claudius was proclaimed emperor.

#Ardoch #Roman Fort in the snow - This large Roman fort is near Braco in Perthshire, #Scotland & is one of the most complete Roman forts in the UK with some of the best preserved Roman earthworks in Europe. It dates back to the campaign of #Agricola in Scotland in the 80s AD

The Querquetulanae were Roman nymphs of the oak grove (querquetum), linked to growth and renewal 🌳 Their cult was associated with the Porta Querquetulana in Rome’s Servian Wall, believed to mark the site of an ancient sacred oak wood. 🏛️
