I am pleased the Government has done another u turn.

Attempting to cancel elections, on top of scrapping jury trials, mandatory ID cards, criminalising peaceful protest and harassment of journalists is part of a disturbing authoritarian trend of this caretaker Prime Minister.

A large lab majority should have been a generational chance to do important stuff. It was a 'change election. What we got was timidity and staying inside the Tory defined tramlines of economic policy

Baffling, really, that a government created, & until recently run, with such heavy influence from this man, (albeit often through proxies like McSweeney) should find itself at record lows of mistrust, dislike and unpopularity, I really can’t explain it

Douglas Alexander claims on R4 that the rule used to block Burnham’s candidacy has been in place “for several years”, and isn't challenged by Nick Robinson. Lazy, when everyone who’s paying attention (such as the FT journos 👇) knows the rule was put in place a year ago, precisely to stop Burnham.
And it's is IMO just right *in of itself* to go 'no, you can't skip out halfway through your mandate', but let's not pretend that Labour made this rule change out of a high-minded commitment to not disappointing the voters rather than going 'oh, creating this loophole sure is helpful'. Come on.

Honestly boycotting the World Cup would be the most effective and probably the least disruptive of all of the options available to Europe. I’m not sure how you can send teams and fans to contribute to a spectacle designed entirely to celebrate a guy trying to invade your territory.

The USA is no longer a liberal democracy. It has diverged so sharply from cultural values still held in Europe that we cant now think of the USA as our partner. Its not just Trump, or Greenland. It is now a very different place. Homophobia and intolerance are rising. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/19/o...

And yet only Minnesota is being occupied by masked thugs over "immigration."

It's *not* about immigration.

The central tenet of the US gun lobby is that citizens must have the right to bear arms as the ultimate safeguard against an authoritarianism government.

So, where are you, guys?

Or was that another made-up reason to keep the bucks rolling in for the gun industry?
