Fellow Calcuttan writer/editor Archita Mittra is in desperate need of financial help. She recently lost her father, her home was damaged in the recent rains, & her mother's in hospital. They don't have insurance, & she's a freelancer. I can vouch for her. Please share widely & donate:

Personally, I think that if you're going to write a romantic adaptation of the lion king (like specifically naming it and not like hamlet as inspo), then the characters in the book should be part of the African diaspora and not... White French people.
But alas... 🫠

haha, a year. i am very sorry to report that somewhere in romancelandia, a white woman is probably writing this and is planning to self-publish something like this within weeks.
We're probably a year away from someone dropping what they'll describe as a "griping Romeo & Juliet story" about an ICE agent falling for a woman he tear-gassed while kidnapping her father.
It'll be written by a white woman from a law enforcement family, and she'll be *shocked* by the backlash.
It'll be written by a white woman from a law enforcement family, and she'll be *shocked* by the backlash.
They’re going to try, they’re going to find a very popular actor, and they’ll shoot it morosely, and they’ll tell you they’re really trying to “honor the story” of the people they targeted for kidnapping and detention amid this psychological study.

#159 A Deal With The Devil by @gothgreenwitch.bsky.social
After the all out action of the last installment, this was a relatively quiet episode, focusing on intrigue and conspiracy. It brought more of the story into focus and, I think, may have started to set strands up for year 2.

I think that many do not realize that when people say they will die without the ACA, they are not exaggerating or being dramatic. I take medication daily because without it my body does not recognize when to stop bleeding. So I take medication to "trick" my uterus into thinking I am pregnant.

Authors are constantly telling people how they made it! It's just that it takes a LOT of hard work and *patience* but people like this didn't wanna hear that advice. They think there's some kind of secret code or magic words that'll let you skip all that.

Can I live in boots? Can I eat boots? If ground beef is up 462% from where it was when I was a kid and housing is up 337%, does it matter that much to me that I can buy more enshittified Doc Martens that won't last the year versus the secondhand pair that's lasted me my entire adult life?
OK Wil’s point simplified. An e.g.
Back in the day a pair of shoes would cost a week’s wages. Let’s call it $1000
Today shoes are cheaper approx $100.
So today you could buy 10 pairs of shoes for a week’s wages.
Someone who can afford 10 pairs of shoes is richer than someone who can afford one.

If you don’t derive any benefit from the act of writing, no pleasure or catharsis or satisfaction, why are you doing it? This isn’t meant to be an aggressive question, I’m not demanding an answer, but it’s a thing you may want to ask yourself. Life is short and you could do something else?
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

It's a little surreal sitting with the fact that there's only two more Hulderotica titles releasing this year. And that what's published so far comes to over 140k. The two remaining stories may push it up as high as 160k. If not, the extra material in the collected edition will. A very full year. :/
