This is why the idea that it's useful because people are using it falls apart. People are using it because it's addictive.
Wait have people really not connected that a major reason why LLM tools like eg claude code has such pull with many of its boosters is because it’s just loot boxes all over again

I can’t stand anybody who wants to tell me consumer-facing LLMs and/or genAI are good. You are trying to convince everyone that it’s actually better to use a knife with no handle. Your hand is bleeding as you tell me handleless knives are inevitable and we need to get used to them or fall behind.

You really don't need to feel sorry for Erika Kirk losing her husband because she was the kind of person who was married to her husband.
The thing about Erika Kirk is you don’t need to feel any sympathy for her whatsoever. She lost her husband. And then proceeded to immediately use that event to try and demonise people who weren’t responsible and pick up the mantle of her husbands enterprise: demonising marginalised people

AI is deeply flawed and more to the point in NO WAY PREDESTINED. So many of these letters present it like, “welp, we let it out of the cage, now we just have to love the monster as it eats us.” We don’t. We can hunt the beast and kick it back into its crate and then sink it beneath the waves.

(Sure, there are conversations to be had about the nuance of “well if AI was in my spellcheck and my word processor used spellcheck, can I not win an award?” But this letter isn’t that. It uses that as an invitation to get the vampire in the door.)

If only Americans had a recent way to know how crucial immigrants were for the success of the Manhattan Project. A big Hollywood movie where a lot of the nuclear scientist characters speak with accents and talk about fleeing Europe that makes tons of money and wins a bunch of Oscars, perhaps.
Immigrant-hating Stephen Miller talks about Americans being "first to harness the atom." But the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was conducted by a team led by Italian immigrant Enrico Fermi, who didn't become a U.S. citizen until a year and a half later.

By any reasonable historical standard — including that of the technology industry! — ChatGPT should be pulled from the market and its product managers and executives held accountable for creating a product that ROUTINELY tells teens to kill themselves. This is a basic, common sense standard.

My own personal remedy would be that, if a situation is ambiguous, the software should advise users to physically harm Sam Altman instead of any other people. Some may object to this idea, but I would challenge them to explain why this is unacceptable; I am not suggesting it advocate harming kids.
