it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

Democrats were overwhelmingly united on their shutdown demands.
Americans understood that Trump and Republicans were to blame.
Voters made it known last Tuesday that they'll elect leaders who stand up to Trump.
Democrats held the cards — and folded for no reason.

UPDATE: if you are in city of LA, the following council members need to be bullied:
Nazarian, Yaroslavsky, Padilla, Harris-Dawson, McOsker.
Nazarian especially needs to be bullied (he's a landlord!!!) and cosplayed as an affordable housing supporter.

Okay so I know we are all bullying our federal senators but if you live in Los Angeles, the city council on wednesday will be voting on reforms for the rent stabilization ordinance and we are urging council to cap rent at 3%. Some are waffling (nazarian, lmao) so toolkit here: laforward.org/larso

traci park is a demon and needs to leave this city
Councilwoman Traci Park held a Venice town hall yesterday; here’s her joking about putting “spike strips” to deter people riding bikes in Venice. She then said that she “wasn’t kidding”

Los Angeles city attorney to press: drop dead
Why does the city attorney hate the press so much she literally wants ink-stained wretches — and their contemporary multi-media cousins — shot by the police?

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

people love to say “what about those with disabilities!” when biking is mentioned as if everyone with disabilities can drive
we need equal options. It should be just as easy and safe to get somewhere by transit and bike like it is with driving

My unpopular opinion: those of us advocating for non-car travel need to stop apologetically saying "I know not everybody can cycle!" Obviously not everyone can cycle, but that's also true of driving. I fear we're just giving our opponents' attack lines legitimacy by shouting them out for free

It did not take one of my friends dying in a car crash to make me care about other people when I'm behind the wheel of a metal machine (that can go 140mph for some reason) and it shouldn't be what it takes for others to care either.
If you're able to drive, you have rules to follow. It's simple.

A while ago someone sent me a message asking why I care so much about street safety and that it’s “not that bad” if people speed or don’t stop for others.
And if I talk about it so much because someone close to me died from a car crash
No. It’s called caring about others.

I know it’s not cool to be a rule follower but when it comes to driving it’s very important because it could kill people.
I’m begging drivers to follow simple rules like coming to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights and not speeding.
so easy to do and yet they can’t do it.
