the crowd sizes are obviously the highlight here but the fact that *this* is the public statement of the NYPD does not bode well for the regime. or, put another way:

I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win
ZERO arrests at No Kings in NYC. (And the NYPD isn’t notorious for being sympathetic with people anti-Trump.)

This proves what shameless liars Speaker Mike Johnson & Karoline Leavitt are to slander the participants as violent anarchists.

I found this a really illuminating thread on what demonstrations do and why they matter.
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

In a time when political divisions run deep, genuine dialogue can feel impossible — but it doesn’t have to be.

Learn from a practice called “deep canvassing,” which supports strangers to engage in this challenging yet essential task.

The random people who called into this C-SPAN session had better questions for Mike Johnson than most corporate media outlets
C-SPAN caller to Mike Johnson: "Hearing you say that 'everyone is smiling' in cities where troops have been rolled into feels dystopian and insane watching the response to it."

A lot of discourse on the left/liberal side is plagued by false dilemmas and binary thinking that gets in the way of creativity and result in stale arguments that do not address what is at hand: authoritarianism *is* a bread and butter issue
Mamdani’s innovation is showing how to emphasize cost-of-living *without* retreating from the defense of immigrants and *without* shirking the mission of centralizing Trump’s authoritarian lawlessness.

He attacks all forms of power, economic *and* authoritarian.

SB 634 makes it clear: cities cant block life-saving outreach & services for people experiencing homelessness. Without services + housing, there is no real path forward. #SB634 #EndHomelessness @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social

Opinion |Cities that ban or criminalize homeless services worsen California’s crisis
A bill on the governor’s desk would stop cities from chasing away supportive services and workers who help unhoused people survive the streets.

A must-read piece and a must-watch video
I had a whole story ready to publish about this convention center vote, but Yaroslavsky's speech — one of the most powerful I’ve ever seen on the council floor — said it better than I ever could. It's a must-read, and I also included a link to the video
"This expansion is unrealistic, unaffordable, and fiscally irresponsible"
Katy Yaroslavsky's words are about the city's convention center — but they are really about the city

ned is exactly right. the challenge is reconnecting the democratic party to a mass constituency and building real affinity between voters and the party. it would be more worthwhole to put $10 million into piloting democratic clubs and associated newspapers bsky.app/profile/resn...
This is the whole thing right here. All these tired fights about whether Dems should moderate are ways of dancing around the real problem, which is the that political parties no longer have any mass constituency.
In many countries, (esp. white, male) workers increasingly vote for radical right parties. Still, a sole focus on right-wing ideology only captures a narrow part of working class consciousness. Most workers, including many right-wing voters, are politically demobilized and distant from all politics.

Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.
