This concept is often hard for devs to grasp too, not just players. I put it as "the joy of doing" vs. "the joy of being".
Why does some grind or hard challenge feel joyful in game A, but a chore in game B? You enjoy *existing* in game A. The "thing to do" serves that joy.

i understand this is hard to believe and i don't mean to diminish the headwinds we are all facing right now but you have to remember that using shock and awe to make bigotry look more popular than it is is fascism 101. most people did not just forget that trans people are normal in the past 8 months

I don't think it's healthy to think about "fandom" or "thinkpiece" when you watch or read something for the first time. I think you should not tell your heart what people will have said about it.
