Tomorrow is the Fifth of November – but let’s forget Guy Fawkes and his actions against an arrogant Protestant king and instead look to our own history: the unlawful attack on Parihaka and, by extension, Māori sovereignty.

It beggars belief that MUP are scrapping Meanjin *entirely*. Could it not even continue as an online journal? And what will happen to the vast and essential archive on its website? The decision is a stunning, appalling act of cultural vandalism which demands complete transparency and accountability.

This is a sore point for the whole diaspora so pardon me for getting in a shit about it, not only Indigenous people but all immigrant communities in the West have been traumatised and robbed of our culture by this thinking.
The 'two languages confuse children' line is literally assimilationist shit from two generations ago that has been so massively debunked even as whole cohorts lost their mother tongues at school.

Last word on this: monolingualists and monoculturalists are our Achilles’ heel. It feels cosy for some, but it makes us insular, village-like, and unable to handle the complexity of a global world and different world views.
