Hi, bushfire survivor here and NSW RFS volunteer.

If you think you are going to stay and defend your property...Don't.
You are not prepared for the intense radiant heat, the ember showers, the smoke, the collapse of all of your energy.

If you have been instructed to leave.
Leave early.

Bravo to the writers already pulling out of Writers' Week!

I think any show associated with the broader Adelaide Festival should also reconsider their participation in the line-up. Let's not split hairs, it's the AF Board who have done this. They should feel the boycott across the Festival.

My reply to the Adelaide Festival Board's email. I'll add the text in a thread.

In no way do I believe this ill-conceived decision has come from the Adelaide Writers Week team.

What’s the point of writers’ festivals — or, for that matter, writers — if they can’t discuss issues that matter? Australian arts administrators would rather destroy the whole sector than allow Palestinians to speak about genocide. It’s beyond shameful.

Stand up for writers. Stand up for artists. Stand up for courage, rigour, honesty and care. Bring back cultural leadership – and the ability to feel shame when you're devastating cultural institutions and human rights. Defend democracy. Don't let things darken any further. There's too much at stake.

I hope other participants reconsider their part in it.

The fire that launched a campaign.

Good news. The first group of volunteer arduous (remote area) firefighters in VIC have just completed their training & depending on how many fires we see in coming days are likely to be deployed for the first time this week.

We’re going to see a lot of furrowed-brow statements from various governments and politicians around the world about international law, as if that means a single god-damned thing after the last two years of daily slaughter in Gaza.

Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.
