Querying 2 completed novella manuscripts (pitches below!)—“Pieces of the Last Summer,” a speculative-literary piece, and “What Comes After,” a speculative thriller. Both are set in a far future society of hunter-gatherers.

Also in progress on a novel, “A Sunburst Bond,” a sci-fi political thriller.
Me: I swear, it was just a fling. I was experimenting. It didn’t mean anything.

One of the funniest moments in my college career was when a poetry professor, a very sweet old man, told me, wrt meter, “I don’t understand. You get it conceptually and are clearly trying very hard, but you still can’t do it at all.”
the frustrating thing is that meter isn't particularly hard! you can teach the basic idea in an hour
I was never ever taught how meter worked in public school English, and to this day I consider it a signal failure of the literature curriculum

Meter is super cool when you understand it properly, and also a useful device for ESL students (as you've discovered)

i think the thing people don't really understand is that it's not search which has gone to shit, not entirely. it's the internet.
every AI phone commercial is just someone having an extended, spoken conversation that could also have been a Google search before Google turned into AI slop

AGI is coming for all of us. It will write symphonies, direct movies, and author the best novels.

The only thing it won’t be able to do is VC investing, which must be reserved as a task only for the most-special people

Really enjoyed Babel by @rfkuang.bsky.social. It was my first time reading her work, and I was initially skeptical of the setting, but she does such a great job drawing you in with characters in the 1st half and then going to levels I never would have expected in the 2nd half

I did know about Paul Newman as a child but primarily because of the pasta sauce
Always baffles me when someone said “I didn’t hear about that when I was a kid.” Of course you didn’t. You were a child. You hadn’t heard of most things. I didn’t know who Paul Newman was when I was a kid, that doesn’t mean he didn’t exist.

Hiring Patton was the most positive thing the Bulls had done in the last several years. So, this is awful. Also, good to know they only have one analytics guy now too 🫠
Player development has never been a higher priority for the Bulls front office, which is going all in on “experienced young players” in a rebuild.

But after the dismissal of Peter Patton, the path forward is less clear.

So where do the Bulls go next?
Chicago Bulls’ dismissal of Peter Patton puts player development in the spotlight for front office
The Chicago Bulls opted not to exercise a team option on player development director Peter Patton’s contract. The decision was not well-received by many players.
