When a politician says: we’ll deregulate health insurance and send you a “freedom account” check, ask: freedom to buy what? If insurers don’t offer real policies or can cherry-pick only healthy people, that money is a coupon for a store that’s not open.

Oddly enough, in media coverage of Dems' video warning against carrying out illegal orders, there's very little discussion of *whether it's actually reasonable to fear Trump is giving illegal commands or not.*

The evidence is strong that he is. Media should say so:

Many of us learned long ago that there is no "Legal Philosophy" in the Federalist Society. It is a club that gives members a leg up in the competition for certain judicial clerkships and jobs in the Trump administration. That is it. Period.

How does the NY Times not know this?

Very well put. Reminds me of the observation that Goebbels (and, as it happens tho' not necessarily because of direct imitation, the Argentine military in 1976-83) would retain the font and typographic style of the newspapers they "intervened", which wd reassure readers that nothing had changed.

Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.

Again: If this were Biden it would be front page news and Fox would be talking about it non stop.

Once again Trump gets a pass.

1. This is a thread on freedom, and how easy it is to lose.

Over the past 2,000 years in Europe, there have been few periods and places of freedom. For much of the time we lived under highly oppressive tyrannies of various kinds, whether small or grand, local or imperial, secular or religious.🧵

📌Dick Cheney helped push W. Bush into an illegal war based on lies that resulted in the killing and wounding of hundreds of thousands of innocent troops and civilians, and then profited handsomely off of it.
He was one of history's worst people. Don't dishonor the dead by honoring this monster.

Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

Comparing the relation between the presidential election results in 2020 and 2024 with the post-election commentary is a fascinating exercise.

2020
Biden 81,283,501 popular votes, 51.3%
Trump 74,223,975 popular votes 46.8%

2024
Trump 77,302,580 49.8%
Harris 75,017,613. 48.3%

GOP closing arguments were:
1.) Haitians are eating your cats
2.) Puerto Rico is a shithole
3.) Peanut the squirrel will be avenged

Naturally, the media accused Kamala of being light on policy.
trump just stood on stage and swayed for 45 minutes. he was probably having a medical emergency in front of a half empty arena, and just… nobody said anything about it. i think there might be more to the story, other than kamala wasn’t pro israel enough lol

Inflation under Biden: "Should the President be fired out of a cannon or merely tarred and feathered?"
Inflation under Trump: "Well, pobody's nerfect!"
The media’s apparent normalization of 3% annual inflation is wild. The framing is problematic considering the average household will spend almost $2500 more a year for the same goods and services at this rate of inflation. How can this being sold as normal? www.cnn.com/2025/10/24/e...

For sure some of the legacy media outlets are downplaying the protests because they’re aligned with Trump, but I think an even bigger factor is how many elite journalists have a patrician disdain for the idea that politics can happen in the streets and not just the CNN green room.
