It’s baby octopus season 🐙🦑

Saw this little guy last night with the Salish Sea School in Anacortes, WA as part of their free community dock walk I volunteer as an interpreter for.

We can tell it is a giant pacific octopus from the single line of chromatophores on each arm.

I just discovered that my affinity apps no longer work and I had to download the new „free forever“ version.

As much as I like free stuff, this feels very ominous. Canva doesn’t seem that trustworthy to me… And I don’t want yet another good digital resource to go the route of enshittification. :(

Welcome to the 2025 #Nudivember art challenge!

Like last year, here is a list of some lesser known, yet always fabulous, nudibranch species.

Participate as much or as little as you want in any art form you like.

Lately we have been working on the interactions of #lichens and #mites. This has been super exciting and the first two publications with our findings are now out. Here a quick summary (thread).

I'm not sure *why* we're snailposting, but... okay! Here's a veliger of I know not what species. Pic from a blackwater dive in Balayan Bay, Anilao

I don’t find many amphipods in my plankton samples - most are benthic (live on the sea floor), but I’ve had 2 in the last 2 weeks! I’ve not ID’d them yet (so please feel free to save me time and ID them for me if you know!).

Also shameless repost for the #snailposting because this is my favourite snail.
I’m shooting a few mollusc photos for the profs at my university. This one (Calliostoma zizyphinum) is my favourite so far! :D

It’s a nice change not having to mind all the bristles and paddles of the polychaetes I usually deal with!

While I don’t think anyone has made a specific designation between “larval” and “adult”, in the moorish idol, I’m going to label this one “post-larval”

Speaking of asymmetrical crustaceans, look at this huge claw!

Aha, the paper I really wanted. Here they found it is pretty easy to lose asymmetry, but it's focused on the posterior end

I'm still weirded out by how large the proboscis in Glycera spp. is. You can see the two darker spots in the top right coil of this worm (Glycera fallax). Those are the jaws. The proboscis goes all the way to there.
