I've been slacking on #Crustmas, so today two peacock mantis shrimps from our last Bali vacation with @cecclementi.bsky.social.

Mantis shrimp are the most superpowered animals: 12 vision photoreceptors including UV and a 1500-Newton "fist"punch with the acceleration of a revolver bullet.

They’re actually parasites! When they lose their limbs they anchor themselves to the skin of other animals to extract nutrients.

And they can attach almost anywhere, including on eyes 😟

I don't have any more good recent crustmas pics on me atm (I'll see what I have on my pc later and maybe queue some posts if I have anything good) but I DID see starfish cheeks at the new england aquarium

Not sure this counts as Crustmas either, since it's more stuff I collected rather than made, but here's some of my tree ornaments.
Two christmas ornaments. One is a carved shrimp with a santa hat and wire legs. The other is a very sparkly, glittery, and rhinestone coated red glass lobster. The antennae are especially lovely, with a nice sheen and curve. Please ignore the glitter stains on my washing machine, this is where the littles play with stuff when I don't need my keyboard covered in mica powder.

I believe this is the lined shore crab - Pachygrapsus - exposed at low tide in #Humboldt for #Crustmas. 🦀
Looking at the face of a crab out of the water. It's claws are relatively large, but the claw tips are hidden behind a large barnacle. The claws are mainly brownish orange with spots that are kind of in a giraffe pattern with lighter blotches separated by darker brownish orange. Each of the blotches is subdivided into several sections by darker lines. The pinchers of the claws fade to white. The upper claws and legs are dark purple. Some of the mouthparts have light blue and green bits, but are mostly white and cream colored. Its eyes are on short stalks and are black. The visible front portion of the shell appears black and has faint transverse lines. There are at least four small barnacles on its left claw, and about a dozen small barnacles on the front of the shell between its eyes. The rock it is on contains barnacles, mussels in the top right, and a lot of stringy brown algae.

Day 4: King Crab (family Lithodidae), a deepwater crab that includes at least ten species and is found globally. While they look like true crabs, they're most closely related to hermit crabs.

Fossil crustaceans for #Crustmas. This is Yicaris dianensis, the oldest crown group crustacean (514 million years ago from China). The reconstruction by @franzanth.bsky.social is a composite of fossils. All are 3D phosphatized larval stages, we don't know what their adults looked like! 🧪🦑

Semibalanus balanoides in steel, bronze, and silver for #Crustmas
My sculpture of the common rock barnacle Semibalanus balanoides viewed from the top with my hand for scale. The barnacle is feeding, with its legs fully deployed in a wide fan emerging from the folds of its soft tissues. The shell is rough bronze-infiltrated steel, warm in color; you can see some details of how the plates of the shell interlock.

This piece shows the diversity of hermit crabs, which can take very different shelters (or none at all!)

Dardanus calidus, a typical hermit crab with a gastropod shell and some anemones on top of it c. Pylopagurus discoidalis, a deep water species that uses shells of scaphopods (a mollusk with straight shell) d. Paguritta gracilipes, a colourful crab that lives in tube worms inside corals e. Merry #Crustmas Eve, friends! Here are Buoy #barnacles (Dosima fascicularis)! They're pleustonic (living at the sea-water interface) goose barnacles that drift the ocean using floats they make or find- like Velella! Sometimes we get lucky enough to find them when they wash ashore. #25DaysofCrustmas
