Bad takes on NBA, politics, and policy. Desperate to get away from the hellsite.
As someone who generally agrees that moderation is good, it's really disappointing how dishonest some of election Twitter is when it comes to Mamdani. There is *NOTHING* to take away about partisan baselines in a race vs a former Dem governor who was part of an NYC political dynasty.

If Dems do end up having another battle in February, while securing military and SNAP for a year, deal is not as bad for them as it seems, but not sure they have the stomach for it.

Last night was mostly a win for the moderate Dem crowd, but it's worth noting that Jack Ciattarelli tacked hard to the center in a state Trump was within 6 points and it still didn't matter one bit. National environment dictates all.

It's worth noting Spanberger is on pace to outrun Ghazala Hashimi by 3-4 points. To the extent she is overperforming due to her specific ability to grab swing voters, that is probably closer to the margin than how she's performing compared to Harris.

Does Nate Silver of all people really not understand one of the fundamental laws of OLS? You can't regress a modeled estimate on something correlated with the things used to calculate that estimate. It's one of the cardinal sins of statistics.

I've had an HSA for 3 years now and this is going to be the first year I end up using some of it instead of hoarding for retirement. Physical therapy is not cheap! Although, it will probably help in retirement not to have a fucked up back.

FTR, my opinion on moderation is that it works fine.

However, the thesis that the rightward shift of populations in the Western world is entirely because every single left wing party on Earth moved far left, and no other structural problems, is so insane in how juvenile it is.
his thesis is literally "moderation has never been tried", it's incredible

absolutely hallucinatory man they really memory-holed her entire campaign

This is a great addition to the "everyone is 12" theory. Apparently the last 12 years of politics could have been fixed with this 22 year old's one simple trick that no one has ever tried!

I find it very funny and telling that the WelcomePAC ""report"" was written by a guy who had a substack as a Yale student, got to guest write on Matty's blog and appeared on Slate's podcast in 22 because he is the son of one of the co-hosts) and then went on to work for David Shor and Future Forward

i mean, harris ran the campaign they’re advocating for. it probably etched out an extra point or two but that was never as important as the macropolitical enviroment (backlash from covid inflation) which, via association with joe biden, harris could not escape.
the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

It’s been nearly a year since the election and people are still pretending Harris ran on trans illegal taco trucks.

Hope the shutdown doesn't last too long obviously but it's honestly been nice being productive around the house for once instead of collapsing into goo every time I'm home.

This Kawhi Clippers thing is insanely serious and I feel like people are not grasping it enough. It is an existential crisis for the league far worse than the Jontay Porter situation. Like, they HAVE to punish the Clippers, and severely, otherwise the entire CBA is rendered pointless.

Also, if you're so price sensitive then wait for a damn sale, you don't need to buy everything day 1. If you desperately want to then pay up.
I have no patience for this. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time retailed for $59.95 in November, 1998. That's $117.27 today.

You're dramatically underpaying for games right now. In fact, AAA studios are killing themselves with big bet live-service disasters and microtransactions to cover costs.

Downtown Houston, the only part that feels like a real city, is half as dense as Alexandria, VA. Such a gross city.

It's really annoying how YIMBYs who praise the South/Sunbelt seem to forget that many of the blue states they claim are terrible examples of housing policy also built a shit ton of housing decades ago in the exact same suburban pattern and fucked themselves for generations.

this is basically a case where people need to learn to code, because if you do it immediately becomes obvious how useful LLMs are
people are getting mad at Hank about this but he’s just objectively correct here; there’s this pseudo-Luddite thing going on where folks insist that LLMs do not have any use cases despite that clearly not being true, particularly with how cheap they are to operate (you can run deepseek on a raspi)
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

TLOU2 season 2 is going to be very interesting. Season 1 played it mostly straight, but the second game is way more video gamey so I would expect more liberties taken to fit TV.
