Ok sure our weapons use is different but raids are extremely violent. If Reform win the next GE then we absolutely will see enforcement that is even more ramped up and violent. And they're already dictating the agenda through Labour so let's see how much further Mahmood herself will go.
"The way we do immigration enforcement could not be more different."

What's the outcome that terrifies Labour most in the Gorton by-election?

Reform winning?

Nope. It's the Greens they're most worried about.

They'd prefer Reform to win, rather than the Greens.

I do want to point out that this is the country of the Hostile Environment, Windrush, a Home Office bragging about deportations/using very inflammatory language, amongst other things. The budget might not be there to have a force as widespread and heinous as ICE, but the *will* is absolutely there.
Worth remembering when looking at the horrific scenes in the US right now that both Reform and the Tories have pledged to bring in ICE-style organisations to the UK if they win power

It's hard to see how the Government expects to attract highly skilled workers while rewriting the rules to push out doctors, care workers, engineers - workers from ANY industry - already building lives here.

If promises don’t hold, why would anyone trust them?

Of the many things that are urgently needed in this moment, one of them is certainly solidarity for immigrants and a better understanding how our borders are selectively policed and aggressively enforced.

A week and a bit into the job search, so obviously going to keep re-upping this. Pretty sure that this is the worst time of year to be looking for jobs in my area, but if you are looking for a Comms, policy, advocacy person, or know someone who is, please do let me know or share.

Sadly it is official, my current employment contract finishes at the end of March. It has been a fantastic three years at Migrant Voice. If you, or someone you know, knows of job opportunities for an experienced policy, advocacy and comms person, across multiple sectors, please do let me know.

It is simply a lie to claim that the Conservative government (or any other UK government in recent history) oversaw 'an open borders experiment".

No excuse for the PM or Reed repeating this lie or for media not describing it as such.
“Robert Jenrick is the man who as Immigration Minister oversaw the open borders experiment that led to the biggest increase in illegal immigration in our country”

hi paul, perhaps you should ask anyone who's been through the hostile environment if they think it's "cosplay". you can also ask me what labour's home office did to my wife's naturalisation certificate while you're at it
It’s amazing service to the Tory party from the British press that at the same time they the Tories were cosplaying the hostile environment they were signing almost a million visas per year.

Starmer keeps using this line, & it's bonkers.

Most importantly, it's untrue: the party that ended Free Movement, ran the "hostile environment" & made Suella Braverman Home Sec did not run "an experiment in open borders".

It's also politically mad. Voters who believe this will not vote for Starmer

Last night, over 100 people in two of the UK’s immigration detention centres (Harmondsworth & Brook house) resisted their unjust deportation by coming together and refusing to move.

Their protest was met with riot police and dogs.

Many have now been deported.

The Gov's anti-immigration policies not only fuel fear and division - they actively undermine economic stability.

The economic pressures exploited to drive anti-immigration sentiment - like stretched public services, low growth & limited opportunities - are set to worsen because of these policies.

In grand scheme of Labour's blatantly xenophobic and hostile treatment of migrants, social media posts may seem like small potatoes, but they are the main thing many people will see, and set the tone for much of the debate. It's yet another sign of Labour stocking division.

Very long thread: As with many of Labour's anti-immigration policies, this isn't new. British police have been stationed in other countries for this purpose for a long time
It does however show how Labour is pushing more on anti-immigration than previous governments. 1/

Citizenship is a right, not a privilege.

A two-tiered approach to citizenship sets a dangerous precedent that encourages a principle of double punishment, with deeply racialised outcomes.
