Scoop w/ @nataliekorach.bsky.social: Washington Post leadership spiked a story that had been prepared by the newspaper's media desk, covering the historic layoffs at the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper. Details in @status.news: link.status.news/4ai6W4C

It’s really weird for some corners of the media to do a whole “the Epstein files are a moral panic that has gone too far” thing when no one has faced any sort of punishment and doesn’t sound like they’re going to.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

Discontinued Food News! This will be especially devastating for those of you, who like me, have the childhood sensory memory of clunking a cylinder of orange slush around in a plastic pitcher of water with a wooden spoon to produce the most underwhelming OJ imaginable, burned into your brain!
The iconic, slush-filled tubes of orange juice concentrate, which have been around for 80 years, are being discontinued, the Coca-Cola Company says.

It really is just the US not doing consequences for coddling or collaborating with known child sex traffickers and abusers.
But it’s not. Essentially everywhere in Europe there are people being sacked and facing prosecution because of their appearance in the Epstein files, and rightly so!
I kind of feel like the focus being on one bad man instead of how a shadowy cabal of abusers was using a network of patronage to influence society is a problem. If I were a shadowy cabal of abusers, that’s exactly where I’d want to focus the news

I want to call out two things. First, Judge Blackwell has to repeatedly ask Le why the govt never responded to his inquiry about "safety concerns" which delayed release. After repeatedly suggesting she told the Court in a letter she never sent (her testimony) she admits the info wasn't in the letter
Things start to break down when Judge Blackwell presses Le on why she never explained a supposed "safety concern" delaying someone's release, even after he specifically asked. She tries to blame it on a letter which was never sent, because of other people, before admitting it didn't have the answer.

once again: lawyers are morally responsible for their professional decisions. people get really mad about this but … you picked the job. you took the money. you own what you’ve done.
A bizarre number of people have stepped up to defend Julie Le. What you see in that transcript is an attorney who chose to do evil work—deporting people for ICE then moving over to DOJ in early Jan. specifically to fight these habeas petitions—being called to the carpet. She's desperate, not heroic.
If you want to read the transcript of the February 3 hearing where Julie Le had her "this job sucks" meltdown, now you can:

My criticism of oligarch-owned news outlets does not stop at Jeff Bezos' gutting of The Washington Post.

For the regime and right-wing billionaires, the value of national media is what it *doesn't* produce.

The AJC published its last print edition on 12/31. About half of those laid off will come from the newsroom.

This time, when a 32-year-old Nicaraguan man died, ICE bypassed the county medical examiner in favor of a military facility. They won’t publicly release a ruling.
