I wrote a whole article about why “debates” and podcasts about trans people, especially by non experts with no skin in the game, are the problem.

And people respond by inviting me, a non expert with no skin in the game, to debate trans people on their podcast.

🤦‍♂️

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

Last year I traveled all the way to rural Vietnam to officiate a friend's wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony that mixed cultures and language, and was a celebration of the best of humanity.

He just sent me this post and said "this is how you lost the war."

Bad Bunny's historical advisor is an assistant professor at UW-Madison.

Hell of a flex for your tenure file.
Not at all surprised to learn that Bad Bunny has a historical adviser. His halftime show was a reminder that our history and culture are deeply intertwined with the rest of the western hemisphere. We should think of his performance as part of #America250. #SuperBowl

Pop star Bad Bunny needed a Puerto Rican history scholar. UW–Madison had just the one.

Bad Bunny’s performance began in the plantation, featured broken electric poles, and ended by centering a hemispheric understanding of “América”—among many other things—and some Anglo journalists are like “his performance wasn’t political.”

This is why we need to be telling our stories.

A reminder that Ring had all its cameras breached about 3/4 years ago. People were tracking what time you got home, when you left the kids by themselves, all that.
Here's that Ring #SuperBowl commercial:

Meanwhile, Ring rolls out a feature where someone can upload a picture of a dog (or, presumably, a person) and find them through everyone's personal front-door surveillance network.

I can't be the only one who sees a serious problem brewing.
With domestic violence in Illinois slowly rising, Amazon has donated 1,000 Ring cameras that will give survivors of domestic violence an added sense of security, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and domestic violence victim advocates said Monday.

fellow engineers,

you really need to start asking yourself some questions when building something:

1. how will the police use what i'm making?
2. what kinds of people are the police going to use it against?
3. how many people will be harmed in silence before we find out?

This is the ur-grift: it’s not the get-rich-quick scheme that makes you rich, it’s teaching other people how to sell it to someone else.
To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books.

She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it.

It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.

Lots that is grotesque here, but I think the key thing to notice is the zero-sum worldview: if we take in a 5yo immigrant, this somehow displaces or harms at 5yo American kid. There's a finite pool of "American" to distribute.

A zero-sum worldview is the molten core of reactionary thinking.
Gonzales on Liam Ramos and his family: "They're not gonna qualify for asylum. So what do you do with all the people that go through the process and do not qualify for asylum? You deport them. I understand that 5-year-old and it breaks my heart. I also think, what about that 5-year-old US citizen?"

Some people are citing Virginia’s previous statement that she was not suicidal. As depressing as it is, saying you won’t kill yourself does not actually mean you won’t. Virginia was restrained from seeing her children and was injured in a car accident shortly before her death. Things change.

If people just read Virginia’s memoir, listened to her loved ones and collaborators, and read up on what her life was actually like, the circumstances surrounding her death would not be shrouded in conspiracy. To conspire about survivors instead of listening and understanding them is the problem

It’s incredibly frustrating to see people spread conspiracies that Epstein survivor Virginia Roberts Giuffre “didn’t really kill herself.” It ignores her allegations of domestic abuse against her husband before she did, actually, die by suicide. It’s a way to minimize how pervasive abuse really is
