Drive carefully & salt/shovel your sidewalks as needed. If you're not familiar with how snow & ice work on roads, just avoid driving. Plows & road treatments don't make the weather & precipitation vanish. Road treatments don't work in all weather conditions.
Kentucky, we’re expecting a winter system to move across the state Monday night into Tuesday. Weather will start with rain and transition to freezing rain, sleet and snow. 1/2

ANYWAY

Buy from small businesses
Buy from independent creators
Buy passion projects
Buy commissions
Buy art

In a society that's decided that money is final word, be aware of where yours goes and to support what

Yes it sucks, I don't like it either, but pretending it's not a thing does not help!

no one ever had to be forced to use *good* tech.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

I would try to get a house w/ studio space. Then I can at least keep the creative mess contained so I can work on projects in bits instead of having a months long mess in my primary living space bc I'm too exhausted after work to set up & clean up every time I want to work on something for an hour.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

Remember, the big argument for AI in the arts is that these “artists” have ideas, hundreds of ideas, thousands, all that was stopping them was the hoards of gatekeeping musicians, writers, illustrators… and not that they were lazy and didn’t want to put in the work.

This is a fucking nightmare.
Vinay Prasad of the FDA claims that he has proof that 10 children died from COVID19 vaccines, so the FDA will now target flu shots, look at whether people should receive multiple vaccines at the same time, and make the vaccine approval process significantly more difficult.
FDA to impose strict new vaccine requirements, claiming child covid shot deaths
Vinay Prasad, the nation’s top vaccine regulator, said his team concluded that coronavirus shots were linked to children’s deaths, necessitating a new approach.

I'm not a religious person, but ever so often I wonder about that guy that nobody knew who showed up to my apartment's Halloween party dressed as Jesus. And then the next morning we found his robe.

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Can Border Agents Search Your Electronic Devices? It’s Complicated. | ACLU
We’ve been getting a lot of questions about when border agents can legally conduct searches of travelers’ electronic devices at international airports and other ports of entry. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t simple.

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Whenever people claim archaeology isn't inherently political, some questions to ask them:

Who "owns" heritage?
What gets protected and why?
What stories are being told/preserved?
Whom do those stories serve?
Who gets to tell those stories?
Who controls access to the belongings and stories and why?
🏺 Again and again - our discipline has been crucial to genocide. Pretending otherwise is complicity.
Israel, which has obliterated most of Palestine’s archeological and heritage sites, including ancient churches, mosques, and temples, has suddenly discovered an urge to protect one from Palestinian ‘neglect’. It just so happens to be in the West Bank.

I've tried to keep this word out of my vocabulary for years & didn't realize how few people actually know its origins. I do think when having these discussions it's good to provide alternative words. For me, depending on context, I would sub in words like ridiculous, silly, annoying, ignorant, etc.
CN: ableist language

Tracing the development of "dumb".

PIE = Proto-Indo-European, the probable common ancestor of the Indo-European language family.

The main point here is that the PIE word stem included the concept of "defectiveness".
