Yesterday a scene in which one character explains how to defeat the vampire turned into a scene where the nun who is the principal of the school tries to defend her pupils from the demonic flock of crows.

In Canada, for economic reasons we tried to ignore this. However, as a people many of whom travelled often to the US, we knew it to be an unassailable truth. The current turn in the US simply proved to the Canadian nation the truth its people long understood. #cdnpoli

What book inspired your current WIP?

Mine is a trad vampire tale and I was inspired in part by “They Thirst” by Robert R. McCammon and to a lesser extent by “Salem’s Lot.”

Another 2000 words. One third of the way through November and I’m at 27k words!

Oh ho, her mother must’ve talked about it all the time for her to know what I was capable of doing. She ...” Damion paused, looking to the ceiling then out the window behind me. “She asked me to raise her mother. To bring her back, so she could tell her mother that one day she wanted to be a farmer when she grew up. She had always seen them with their horses and their cattle, and so she thought to herself that when she grew up, she’d like to have lots of animals with her all the time. Such joy as a child, would you not agree?” He paused again as if he was fighting back tears his body could not produce. “I couldn’t.”

Bráthal is in a difficult mental space.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Drisal reemerged armed with a hatchet, and began chopping at the landing and connecting branches, kicking and heaving what was burning away from what still lived intact. In a few moments Rushak arrived to work beside him, having crossed to that tree Iryla-knew-how. But the flaming pieces only dropped to the landing below them, which was also afire. From where he watched, Bráthal had a clear PICTURE of the two of them alone, insignificant fools on one part of one landing, fire at levels above and below them, battling odds that grew ever more impossible. Soon they would have to run. He seemed to see Rushak's clothing catch fire, that voluminous, stupid-looking linen shirt. He would enjoy watching that— even knowing the thought was absurd—and then would see the rest, would see the flames rise to consume both brothers, he seemed to see it ... and a horror filled him then. Writing snippet: She plucked a dusty picture off the wall, rubbed the glass with the bottom of her sleeve, revealing a smiling family of four. A dark-haired man with his arm around a lighter-haired woman—her neck rolled back, caught mid-laugh—two children in bathing suits, a sand castle between them. “Shrimp!” she called. “Come here, come take a look at this.” He meandered over and she pointed, her finger hitting the glass, leaving behind a smudge of dirt. “See that? In the background there? All that blue.” She grinned, almost as wide as the woman in the picture. “That's the ocean.” Her chest swelled as she breathed it in, imagining the sweet, sea-salt air. “That's where we're going.”

Elena had read about Ephtas and what she might expect when she arrived. In her history book, an image of King Merit had been printed nearly a century ago. He’d been a young man then, with a rounded face and wide eyes. She’d been told that these days, the image would be a likely approximation of both Prince Erryn and Prince Drake. Elena still found it difficult to imagine time on such a scale; she was of common blood, and though her parents had placed her in proximity to Touched as often as possible, she had simply not been alive long enough to notice their agelessness for herself. A familiar pang of envy washed over her. She could never be perfect, not compared to them.

He sends me a selfie sitting in the driver's seat, presumably one he took during the day since it's sunny in the background. He's wearing his sunglasses, giving a self- assured grin as he poses in the most flattering way possible, almost like he was made for the camera. There's a handwritten note edited over the image that says 'mine' in cursive with a small heart dotted over the 'i.' I study that picture for a long minute, unable to keep the smile from my face. Not only does Luke look good in the truck, but the idea of him showing off that he's been driving it warms my heart. Still, I can't help but write a snarky reply. "E: Nice try, but this isn't a hostage situation. We don't negotiate with terrorists, even if they are pretty."

Today’s word is “picture”
Back at the table where he usually sat, underneath one of the second floor windows, Twig turned to the indexes. That was usually the best place to start looking for something, though some books didn’t have an index – which was annoying – or they had a poorly written one – which was infuriating. Hexerei was not one of those books, though; an entry for Trotterkopf was there, and Twig quickly flipped to the correct spot in the book. The picture on the page  was a skull-like face, the skin drawn tight like a mummy, but the teeth were long and pointed, especially the canines. Sunken in the sockets were tiny black eyeballs, like marbles, with staring white pupils. He dragged his eyes away from the image and started to read.

He couldn’t “comply” because of his disability…they don’t care

This is not the first time they’ve gone after a disabled person

They target the most vulnerable because it’s an easy way to meet their quota

Somewhere in between, I'd say? My parents paid attention to what I was reading, but weren't extremely strict about it. And I was a curious kid, who would sometimes sneak books I knew I wasn't supposed to be reading yet. That just made them more exciting, you know?

Jim tries to find the little white rat he found at the department store.
He threw the small cage he’d bought into the backseat along with a bag of litter, rat pellets, and a water bottle and carefully headed to Malcolm’s in the dark. No speeding now, not with beer on his breath and jeans. Jim knew precisely what was on the other side of that hole in the storeroom: the dumpster outside. The perfect place for a horde of rats to live. Jim would never be allowed in the storeroom again—possibly in the store at all—so this would be his only shot if Kevin hadn’t already poisoned them. When he drove behind the store and around the corner, he saw a flicker of movement on the ground near the dumpster. Good, there were still some alive. Hopefully the one he wanted was okay.

While the place bore some resemblance to the orbital ports around Kaia, it didn’t seem to be anywhere near as well kept. The lights weren’t as bright, the walls not as polished, and there seemed to be boxes stacked haphazardly: not enough to impede egress, but enough to make the place look untidy. There was also a distinct lack of personnel. It seemed to just be Vezen, and now Trainer and Phan. Once in Vezen’s office – more boxes, these definitely obstructing movement – Vezen took his place behind the desk. He hadn’t even taken a seat before pivoting to address his guests. “So, what’re you looking for way out here?” “Friends,” Trainer said flatly. “Huh. Well, you’re a little late for that.” Trainer’s brow raised on one side. “Is that right?” “What does that mean?” asked Phan. “It sounds like Vezen’s already been turned. Just like Trumane.” “No. No. I’m loyal. A hundred percent. But that’s the problem.” Vezen’s fingers moved down the front of his shirt, unfastening each button in turn as they went. “They could tell you were coming to me for help. They ‘reached out’ alright.” Once enough of the buttons were undone, he gripped the placket and pulled the shirt open to expose his chest. At the center of it was a glowing, swirling, bubbling wound. Phan’s hands clasped over her mouth. “Oh my God.”

Sometimes sneakily, too. Trying keep in mind, though, that every moment anywhere in any direction would always also be a movement in every other direction all at the same time. That was how Willoe’s grandmother had put it to her once, perhaps, in that odd, Chinese-Korean accent of hers, she thought, at some point, sometime, way back when Willoe’d only been just a little girl?

No one ever told me what I could or couldn't read, other than the library policy of not letting children under 12 into the adult sections. I was a late reader due to dyslexia, but once I started I became voracious.
