If you're here to follow along with municipal meetings, you're in the right place. I post about #NewportRI #localpolitics to share what's going on (and some editorializing on events) because paying attention is important. Details of meetings and some community resources in this thread 👇

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

The emerging deal will be that Democrats get fuck all and then go on thanksgiving break while 41.7 million people slip into food insecurity.

Senate Democrats are meeting behind closed doors to discuss the emerging deal. “Stay tuned,” Schumer tells us with a grin.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

Senators who think we’ll get ACA extensions later are fooling themselves. All we’re getting is our communities thrown under the bus.
Those who are caving are giving an autocrat permission to starve and deny healthcare to millions of Americans.

Democrats desperately trying to give away the ounce of power Republicans haven’t seized from them yet.
Love waking up to news that, once again, reminds me that there is no one in power in America who gives a single shit about regular people who are just trying to live their fucking lives.

Hey just a reminder that it only takes 23 Senate Democrats to remove and replace Chuck Schumer as minority leader. They don't do it because the majority of Senate Democrats approve of the way he does politics.

Spending this week in Ireland, learning about their liberation struggles, seeing Palestinian flags fly in every city, I am heartened and dismayed all at once that we continue to have these fights. Dismayed even further that our leaders don’t have the stomach for them.

i’ve voted for Murphy and if Schumer organizes a surrender to the GOP what I expect is for Murphy to enter the Senate chamber and punch Schumer in the damn nose.
So here's where we are, Sunday morning:
Trump is trying to starve hungry kids in order to bully Democrats into abandoning our fight against health care premium increases.
So Trump is starving kids in order to deny families health care.
Dystopian.

Called @reed.senate.gov @whitehouse.senate.gov all the way from fucking Ireland. Don’t give the republicans what they want while our communities suffer.
I'm hearing the same thing. Dems are nearing a surrender. I'm shocked. Largest protest in history + best election night in years + polling showing we're kicking their ass in public opinion. And now Dems may cave.
It ain't over til it's over, so please do call if you've got a Dem senator.

Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

I won’t be back in time, but the #NewportRI #CityCouncil is having a joint workshop on regionalization with the School Committee tomorrow, Monday, 11/10, at 5:30pm at Rogers HS. I had no idea this was happening so I don’t know the agenda or the impetus. I’m sure it will be … interesting.

One of my kids used to work at a Major Grocery Store deli, and they all rang up hot foods as cold for SNAP recipients.
If you work in a deli and can do this without losing your job, please do so.

Most people don’t know that with SNAP you are banned from buying “foods that are hot at the point of sale”. So even if you have SNAP (which people don’t now) you can’t get cooked food. Which means you need to also actually have the resources to PREPARE a “healthy” meal.
Thinking about the social stigma against eating fast food in a country where poor people are being starved by the govt, the cost of groceries and fresh vegetables are astronomical, and a cheeseburger at McDonald’s costs $3.50.
“Clean” and “healthy” eating rhetoric is racist, ableist, and classist.

Currently traveling for work so if my return flights get messed up … well, it’s been nice knowing ya!
No, we do not yet know which flights are cancelled due to the FAA's haphazardly (not at all?) planned 10% airspace reduction.
So far, this is the messaging from every airline:

study after study after study shows that literally just handing people money and telling them "do what you want with this" reduces homelessness, increases food security for children, makes it more likely people will find and retain jobs.1

You can’t even use SNAP to buy a hot rotisserie chicken unless you live in a state with a special waiver.
ROB SCHMITT: People are using SNAP benefits to get their nails done, to get their weaves and their hair. This is a really ugly program.
SEN. RON JOHNSON: That program needs to be dramatically reformed.
