More and more as I follow things here on Bluesky I’m taken back to my days as a U.S. history PhD candidate. I was staring at the bookcase of the professor I was TA’ing for and remarked how well grounded she was in theory. She replied, “Yes, but now I wish I’d had more history and less theory.”

It's almost as if the Enlightenment figures who founded the US had learned the lessons of Europe's wars of religion and created a secular state that would both protect worshippers from political interference, AND protect the polity from becoming dominated by religious sectarians.

Ironically, the 1924 immigration restrictions Miller so loves were meant to prevent more Martins and Sinatras from living here.

Bittersweet Christmas Eve. Spent the day with the grandkids, but they are too young to likely remember. It’s not likely I’ll be alive next Christmas. Still grateful for being here this year and extending traditions to another generation.

My father was a cop who worked every Christmas Eve. Our tradition was not a dinner but snacks when he came home for his half hour dinner break. Ritz crackers, summer sausage, cheese, maybe a bit of herring.

I found this quote from Ben Sasse in his message announcing he has stage four pancreatic cancer arresting and true. I wish him the best in treatment and if you can find the time to read his entire message I wish I could be as eloquent as our situations are similar.

Hey Andy, did you ever wonder why the Latter-Day Saints ended up in Utah? Because when they were forced out of Nauvoo, ILino is they were deemed impossible to assimilate into U.S. culture. The agreement signed by Brigham Young and the State of Illinois reads like that ending the Black Hawk War.
