this is a silly argument. the fugitive slave act was just a bill, passing it was part of liberal democracy, so the people who passed it were supporting liberalism, like them or not. is that helpful analysis
She helped pass a bill—which is 100% part of liberalism. Maybe you don’t like the bill. Maybe the bill will hurt some people and have bad outcomes. But that’s part of liberal democracy.

what annoys me about the data center ban is it's both facially illegal (congress is specifically banning categories of land use in every state???) but also just a small idea. it's a diversion to thinking bigger about how to actually prevent the harms in question, which aren't unique to data centers

I think "ban construction" is just getting around the actual problem: our inability (and active, malicious refusal) to meaningfully enforce environmental law to stop *bad* construction. We passed the Clean Air Act to stop things like the current Memphis pollution from happening,
Bernie Sanders: "We need to be thinking seriously about a moratorium on data centers. You gotta slow this process down. It's not good enough for the oligarchs to tell us 'you adapt.' Are they gonna guarantee healthcare to all people? What are they gonna do when there are no jobs? Make housing free?"

i remain delighted that there is apparently a serious scholarly debate between the camps of "we made friends with opportunistic wolves by feeding them" and "we stole baby wolves and raised them with us on purpose" (or somewhere in the middle) and it's a likely irresolvable question of human origins
